When did you switch from using an infant car seat to a convertible car seat?

When did you switch from using an infant car seat to a convertible car seat?
I know that infants need to be rear facing until they are 1 yo. Since the convertible car seats also have that rear facing feature, I was wondering when others started using the convertible car seats.
DS has been unhappy and has been looking a bit cramped in his infant car seat. I wonder if he'll be more happy if he had a bit more room.

6.5 months when it was too heavy for me to carry anymore.
