What was the best gift YOU got when you delivered?
My SIL is in labor   and I want to get her a new mommy/1st Mother's Day gift. Any ideas?

When I delivered the only present I got was the baby.
Every gift brought was stuff for the baby.
I think a great gift would be a gift certificate for catered dinners (professional or to be cooked by you.)

I think a great gift would be a gift certificate for catered dinners (professional or to be cooked by you.)
Same here. I didn't get anything. Everything was for the baby.

Same here no gift, just the baby (which was a great gift, but if he came with an accessory for mom it would have been nice.)
I agree a dinner would be a great gift. I remember coming home from the hospital & starting to cook dinner (the baby was still in the hospital). My DH came in & said "Don't cook. I have something for you. He brought in bags of food from my favorite restaurant (they dont do take out, but he told them why he needed it.).

What I appreciated most was when a good friend and her husband came over the next weekend and brought bagels, lox, whitefish, cheese, bread, you name it... and enough to last the week. It was sooooooooooo nice and helpful.

My mother who came from NY. She cooked and cleaned for us while she was visiting for 2 weeks. It was such a great help. So I'd say any gift that involves a good meal or help around the house.

Chocolate truffles! I had gestational diabetes and I missed having chocolate. As soon as I delivered a few people brought it to me! Thank you..thank you!!!

diamond stud earrings from DH, everything else was for the baby...
I agree with other posters, meals would have been a big help.

A friend brought a little care package to me in the hospital filled with cookies, a magazine, a Burt's Bees facial kit, other snacks, etc. It was the best!

Thanks ladies. I'm definitely going to get them some food. SIL has her mom to help and I can't do much w/ my 2 lil ones around anyway.
Maybe chocolate. SIL loooooooooves chocolate!!!!!!!!

One of my friends did that for me too--that's a great idea. Also, my sister and I were pregnant at the same time so a couple of weeks before we were due, I made and froze several trays of baked ziti for the both of us--she loved it!

I bought one firend a bottle of wine when she had a baby and she said it was the best to get a gift for her not for the baby - and you can really use a glass of wine once in a while

I got Lindt chocolates, a cookie bouquet and my SIL brought dinner over for us one night and bagels one morning. Meals are definitely good!
Our friends recently had a baby and we got them a fruit bouquet from Edible Arrangements.

I was lucky. Godiva Chocolates, a charm bracelet, a mother & child necklace. (my family has a food business- so meals were a given) New pajamas were nice. My cousin just had a baby and I bought her some comfy lounge wear. I also got a gift certificate for a massage and a gift certificate for professional pictures of the baby.
I know- I was lucky.

I remember my SIL bringing me chocolates to the hospital and loving those. When I had Tara by friends brought a big container of ruggelagh (sp?) and that was awesome too..
OK I clearly dont have any cherished heirloom ideas here LOL
But I also wanted to add - WOW!! How exciting your SIL is in labor!!!! I cant wait to hear the news!

food, food, food. Having yummy food at home that I didn't have to cook was the best gift. My best friend sent a catered dinner (ziti, bread and wings) - it arrived the second day we were home and I could have cried I was so happy! I even had extra to offer people who dropped by, it was great! The best thing I got while in the hospital was chocolates. (Aside from my dd's of course!)

A huge roast beef sandwich from my favorite deli. My gyn was very insistant on me not eating cold cuts while pregnant. I ate turkey here and there but I steared clear of Roast beef since it can be rare. IT WAS SO GOOD!
