What to do on LI with a 1 year old child?

We would like to try to stay "locally" so no trip to NYC.

I never went to White Post farm. Is there a petting zoo? What else is there? Is that a good place for his age?

What other suggestions do you have?

The Riverhead aquarium is out, so are the Bronx zoo or the NY aquarium. That's too far for what we want.

TIA

The childrens museum does not have much for a 1 year old.

1. Gymboree
2. The Holtsville Ecology Center has a petting zoo (and its FREE)
3. Any park or playground
4. the beach
5. My Gym (there is 1 in Plainview)
6. Your local library is SURE to have programs for 1 year olds

Are you in Nassau or Suffolk?

White post farms does have a little petting zoo. You can buy the bottles /cones to feed the animals as well. There is also a deli/market there to have lunch with picnic tables.

Venetian Shores in lindenhurst south of montauk highway is a little water park that is cute. It should be opened by now.

Heckscher park in Huntington in very nice with a great play area for the kids.

They have some animals that are within reach that you can hand feed. A lot of their animals though are not within reach (kind of like the regular zoo). They have a little train that you can pay to ride. They also have some mechanical ride on things like "Bob the Builder's Backhoe" and "Winnie the Pooh". They have Pony rides but I think that's for a bit older. They have a sand play area with a little playground. There's lots of grass area if you want to do a little picnic and they sell food also. It's a cute place.

White post farms is great. DS loves it. Feeding and petting the animals, the puppet show, the train ride, the playgrounds.

Venetian Shores Spray Park (Lindenhurst) and Tanner Park spray park (Copiague) are both cute and fun for the kids (Venetian is a little nicer).

MY GYM (they have them all over, I joined the one in W Babylon). You join a class that is an 8 week session (if you miss a class there are other days where you can make it up) and for the summer they have unlimited "Open Play" where you can go at certain times and play at no additional charge.

Holtsville Ecology Site has a little zoo that you can pet the goats and feed them, but they have a lot of animals to see (including bears!) and its FREE!

Those are usually the things I do with the kids! HTH!

I second the Holtsville Ecology site...a pretty extensive petting zoo, a playground, a pool...and it's FREE!! (I think the pool is like $5 bucks)

Also - check your local library and/or town recreation departments...a lot of times they have programs designed for younger children...either free or cheap!!
