It means getting the best of both worlds from your job & from your personal life.

For me it means, liking my job but really loving the weekends & making the best of my time off - even if that means holding my daughter's hair while she throws up. I say the best because I want to be there when they're sick.

For my employer, it means personal life is interferring in staying late, the ability to get me on my days off, etc. They're not that supportive.

To me it's being able to handle work and life at the same time comfortably and successfully.

That work doesn't interfere with life and life doesn't interfere with work. I think it's important to leave work at work most importantly!

I am not sure what it means to my employer but I work for an old, conservative company that is very family oriented. They are very supportive of work / life balance. HR even has information about it. But my company has flexible hours, summer hours and give a lot of vacation time.

Re: What is work/life balance?

Being able to have a career and a family/life outside of work while still having a successful career

I am thankful that I found a company Andy a manager that is results oriented and as long as your clients are taken care of no one is watching the clock. If I need to leave for an hour to go to parent day at preschool I have the freedom to do so. Or I can wah if dd is sick.

What is the definition?
Being able to have a job that I enjoy where I can meet my deadlines during business hours.

What does it mean to you? Same as above.

What does it mean to your employer? Same as above. However, on RARE occasions they may ask me to do something outside of business hours. I can count on one hand the # of times this has happened.

Does your employer support it? My employer is supportive, and family-friendly I believe. I also don't take advantage nor do I bring my family or personal business into work.

i actually think this is changing, as the new buzz word i am hearing is work/life "integration"....which definitely crosses the boundaries of separating work and non-work activities. but with us all connected all the time, i see the integration trend as one that is here to stay.

what balance means to me is working in an environment that is supportive and encouraging of having a life outside of work and having a well-rounded person. is my job supportive? no family yet, just me and DH, so only time will tell....so far, there are definitely mixed messages. vacation time is good, but cant really work from home :-/

Work/life balance is being able to be successful within your career without your family having to sacrifice to get you there.
For me personally, and for the record I am my own employer, it means being able to focus on my family when I'm home, but when I'm at work I give it 100% of my time, love and effort as well. I'm blessed to work part time only 9 months a year. That being said, unless there is a death in the family or my kids are really sick or I get the occasional migraine that takes me out of commission, I go in to work on work days. Fortunately, my DH is able to come home early or work from home if the kids are sick.

Re: What is work/life balance?

I think it means work fitting into your life but not being your whole life, still being able to nurture your outside interests, activities, adequate time with family, etc.

I have no idea if my employer cares about work/life balance. But we do get a decent amount of paid time off & every weekend off, although no flexibility really as far as hours are concerned. I feel like I have a decent work/life balance right now (&I hope I still feel that way once my kid is born).

Re: What is work/life balance?

I think work/life balance is what you make of it. I work in a tough industry that is not very family friendly. When I told my colleagues I was going part time they told me that I would be working the same hours for less pay. I told them that may happen to others but not to me. You have To learn to say no to new assignments that would make your workload impossible to accomplish but do it in a way that doesn't make you appear lazy. I am also going to work at home one day a week because I asked for it to better my work/life balance.
