wedding invite

a VERY gossipy neighbor after many yrs gets back in touch with my parents about 3 yrs ago. Invites them both to their daughters wedding. In turn they are invited to mine. My dad passed away this winter and they came in for approx 5 min and left very suddenly never returning calling etc... The neighbors then are all invited to their other daughters wedding shower (my mom excluded...y...no one knows). My mom was insulted etc... Do u believe she just received an invite to the wedding (its 3 weeks away). I think shes part of the "B" list. Shes not going and really wants nothing to do with them as they were unsupportive when my dad passed. Does she have to give a gift? If so how much?

Re: wedding invite

I don't think she needs to give a gift and thats pretty rude. If she really wanted to be polite I would send them something inexpensive off of the registry. But if it was me I would not send a gift.

Re: wedding invite

I would send a small gift that they can't trace the amount but could vary widely in price (ie a Marshalls crystal frame).

Re: wedding invite

I would just write on the invite "Would love to have attended but given the very short notice have other plans."

Re: wedding invite

no gift.

According to "The New Book of Wedding Etiquette" page 142:

"Guests who receive and decline a wedding invitation are under no obligation to buy a gift."

And, even people who attend a wedding are not REQUIRED to give a gift.

GOOD ONE! Chat Icon

I would change the "very short notice" to "extremely short notice" Chat Icon

Re: wedding invite

If I didn't care about maintaining a relationship with these people I wouldn't give a gift or feel guilty about it.
