Why are your motion detectors on when it is on stay?

Our motion detectors only are on when we leave the house?

Could it have been a power surge or are you sure it was tripped by the motion detector?

We have Slomins and they said it takes a 60lb creature to set off the motion detector that's why it's ok for cats but not all dogs.

We had it go off twice in the middle of the night and both times it was power surges.

Could you call LIPA and see if there was a surge in your area? Wouldn't want you to have to unnecessarily wait around for the alarm company.

OMG - Didn't even think of that!!! When we jumped up (which was really bad for me to do) the panel said the problem was in the zone in the basement...is it possible that a power surge could have just made that one zone go off?

Since it's just the two of us...we only bypass the motion detector in our bedroom...all others stay on at night when we are sleeping...just in case. I thought that was a normal thing to do. Chat Icon

i only turn them on when i am away or the dog is out w/ me. can't leave them on when the dog is roaming around. if i didn't have i dog, i would still only activate the MD when i was not at home.

Re: We set the home alarm for the first time....

We had such issues when we first got our alarm put in - that DH was going to strangle me. It would go off in the middle of the night - almost every night. We got slomins back in - I can't remember what it was now - but they fixed it.

ETA: Ang - do you have Cablevision as your phone service? Because when Cablevision does tests that sets off the alarm.

Yes - we have the Optimum package! OMG - Now you are making me feel so much better...I guess it was something electrical that triggered it.

We've had the same issue with Optimum. It seems to happen every couple of months at 1:00 in the morning and it still scares the crap out of me!

I agree. The motion detectors should not be on while your in the house. Only the windows and doors should be armed. An intruder must come through a window or door first and this will sound the alarm.

I know this doesn't solve your problem but if the alarm does not sound while your away from the house it may be optimum at night as meantioned, I doubt it though. I have optimum and I've had an alarm for years and this never happened to me. At night I set my alarm to "STAY" mode which arms all entry points.

Okay...unfortuantely I cannot afford to have every window wired. I don't think it's a bad idea to have the MD on in the basement (which no one goes into) at night. Therefore....if an intruder comes in through my basement and starts cutting wires...how would the alarm help me at that point? Whereas the MD would have hopefully caught the person. We don't have animals and there are no other people moving around at night. It's the only one that's on anyway - it's programmed with the interior function.

Ok I see. I assumed all windows and doors were wired.

They can't cut the wires for the alarms on the windows. They are inside not out.

I think that we are having two different conversations. I wasn't talking about cutting the wires on the windows because as I said we don't have an alarm on the windows. As I said, we keep the MD on down there so that if someone were to break through the window (that is not alarmed) and then proceed to cut wires they might not necessarily be detected until too late (hance why the md is on).

I understand that for you it works to not have them on...and just like that is right for your situation...it's right for my situation to have it on.

Re: We set the home alarm for the first time....

Ang,

The same thing happened to us in the middle of the night. We jumped out of bed and DH grabbed a baseball bat...lol....it turns out that Optimum was having an update and they disconnected our phone lines temporariliy - at 1:30am. So, what we had a technician do was disable the alarm if there is a power surger or if the phone gets disconnected. It will blast if a window or door actually opens. If there is a power outage the panel will just have a blinking code that tells you it Happened.

if you have cablevision phone service... they reset their system during the night... and it will make your alarm go off... scaring the crap out of you...

we went through a year of this before we called cablevision... they can change something and fix it so it doesnt happen

Nope same conversation.

I know you don't have the window wires but in one of your posts you had said that it was too much money to have them on all the windows and that they could cut the wires anyway. That is why you use the motion sensors.

Clearly there is a mis-communication and I'm taking that off the boards.

Thanks everyone for your help...when DH got home yesterday the same code was on the panel...he looked it up and it is in fact a power surge that is causing it so we have to call Slomins.
