It's about damn time!!!!!!!!!!! HOWEVER when we get something we always get screwed...NYC isn't in the giving mood they are in the taking mood always so I am always weary of their generosity.

The city may interpret it as maternity leave- but I also define maternity leave as time you are GIVEN by your job as opposed to you using days you've saved.

Oh yeah it's horrible and no one can give you a straight answer on how it works.

Kind of related to this it is horrible that we only get 10 sick days and we don't get them upfront like many LI school districts.

They are adding 4 more weeks to the 12 you already get under FMLA...or at least this is what I heard. It will be in the upcoming NY TEACHER

I know this might come off as snarky...but can someone explain? They are not GIVING anything if you are taking it out of your bank and the extra 6-12 weeks being unpaid..right?

They are just permitting you to extend your FMLA for an additional unpaid 6 weeks. This time will also not count into the TRA system. In many cases, you may have to "buy back" that time in the end if you are retiring.

Im confused bc if it is unpaid what is the differnce?

Instead of maternity you just go on child care....so you can go on child care for 2 weeks and then just come back...the name is really all that changes here.

The only thing that would make this worth anything is if it was paid and/or you kept insurance.
