Wantagh & East Meadow

What can you tell me about the areas and the school districts? I have heard good and bad about both but know that's going to happen when I ask people.

I know people in both the Wantagh school district and the Levittown school district (Wantagh town though), and they are all very happy.

I also know people who live in East Meadow, and they don't seem to have issues. I've heard some people say that East Meadow is "getting bad," but I, personally, feel that many Long Islanders are overly dramatic about these types of things.

Wantagh & East Meadow

Dh and I both grew up in east meadow, and everyone who we know decided to move away when they bought houses because the town isn't what it used to be-if you look there I would suggest the Barnum area which is the school I went to.

I worked in the Wantagh SD and loved it. I would have no problem sending DS there.

DH grew up in East Meadow and always talks positively about his education. His parents are still there and the neighborhood seems nice.

And as of next year, Wantagh will be full day kindergarten.

Wantagh is a small school district (relatively speaking) - 3 elementary schools, K through 5, 1 middle school (6-8), and 1 high school L(9-12). Elementary schools are Mandalay for south Wantagh, the Wantagh school (on Beech St.) for the Wantagh Woods area), and Forest Lake, which is for the areas west of Wantagh Ave, but north of Sunrise (so Holiday Park, Forest Lake, etc.)

North Wantagh (north of Jerusalem Ave) is part of Levittown SD 5, which is a big district (2 high schools, etc.). North Wantagh goes to Salk and MacArthur High school, and Lee Rd. elementary, Gardiner's Ave, or East Broadway, all of which have a good reputation.

East Meadow is a bigger district than Wantagh SD (similar in size to Levittown) with 7 elementary schools, 2 middle/junior highs, and 2 high schools. People seem to prefer Barnum Woods and the Parkway area for elementary schools - both are in the southern part of East Meadow... Barnum Woods borders up to N. Merrick and Parkway borders N. Bellmore.

Working in real estate and living in the area, I know a lot about the schools, so if you have specific questions, let me know!

Yes, you are absolutely right, Kayla! There are 5 in EM, I was thinking of Hicksville - another big district - that has 7.

Another factor for the OP poster to consider, if LIRR is a consideration (which it is for many of my buyers) - Wantagh has an LIRR station (and is on the desirable Babylon train line). East Meadow does not have its own station... you would need to drive down to Bellmore or Merrick, or up to Hicksville, depending on how north/south you are in East Meadow and what is more convenient.

Property taxes are a bit lower in East Meadow than Wantagh, though. And I think you get a little more for your money in terms of houses. For example, I would consider Barnum Woods one of the most desirable sections of EM, and Wantagh Woods is a prime area of Wantagh. Both have lots of ranch style homes. But a $379K ranch in Barnum Woods in East Meadow will be over $400K in Wantagh Woods.

But if you are looking solely at school district rankings from sources like Newsday, Wantagh will be ranked higher.

Both are nice areas, imo, near parks, pools, major roads and parkways, etc. It really depends on exactly what you are looking for and which suits your criteria better.

Wantagh & East Meadow

Each of the EM elementary schools are very different...I'm not sure why Barnum is the most desirable -- maybe because of the Preston Rd influence? There are a lot more break ins total East Meadow on the Preston Rd side of town. Barnum also has a higher ratio in teacher to student then Bowling Green/Meadowbrook/Parkway. I would say that although a little behind in technology, I have had nothing but positive experiences in EM with my children.
