uterine fibroid?

I know nothing about this, but my mom went to a gyno today, and he told her how she has a fibroid that has increased in size its very large now. i hate that he did this, but he started telling her how she can develop uterine sarcoma if she doesnt have this removed asap, and people die from this. Why would you go scaring your patient like that.

shes going for another opinion, but anyone know anything about this?

nope never heard of it. I think it is wrong to scare a patient like that and I am glad your mom is going for a second opinion.

Re: uterine fibroid?

I would find a new doctor.

I had a uterine fibroid that was very large (size of a small football). I had a very successful surgery to remove it and am now pregnant.

I did a TON of research about fibroids and I can tell you this:

--Bascially, if it's cancer, it's not a fibroid. Fibroids by definition are non-cancerous tumors.

--They can tell right away if it is cancer (99% of the time, it is not). I had a sonogram and an MRI and they were very sure it was not cancer. They biospy it anyway during the surgery to make sure.

I don't know why he told you it could turn into cancer. All of the reading I did made it very clear that fibroids DON'T become cancerous. MANY women live with them and don't have them removed because they have no symptoms and the tumor (or tumors) are small.

Here is a great website:

www.nuff.org

It's the National Uterine Fibroid Foundation. Join their Yahoo Group mailing list -- it is great. You can ask questions. The ladies there are wonderful.

Best of luck to you and your mom. Chat Icon

ETA: If she does indeed have to have the fibroid removed, the surgery is really not that bad. Sometimes they can do it laproscopically. She can go home the next day.

If she needs a myomectomy (which is what I had), it's a small bikini line incision. It's very similar to a C-section (except they take out a fibroid, not a baby!) I was home in three days, back at work in a little over three weeks.

Re: uterine fibroid?

I went to three doctors before I was recommended to this one by my doctor cousin:

Mr. Martin Goldstein
40 E 84th St
New York, NY
(212) 472-6500

I love him. He is one of the finest human beings I have ever met. But I must warn you, he does not take any insurance on assignment. My insurance company covered a lot (including ALL of my hospital costs save the $500 deductable and the entire anesthesiologist fee), but I did pay a lot out of pocket too for his surgery fee (the insurance paid only about half -- but I have really awful insurance).

There are SO many good doctors out there. Don't be afraid to try several before deciding on one. And the ladies on the Yahoo Uterine Fibroid Support Group are always recommending docs.

Re: uterine fibroid?

second opinions are very important! i would have been scared also!
i had a uterine fibroid removed in 2005. i went to one doctor who just wanted to keep me on pain killers and not do anything else about it. i didn't want to be on pain killers forever so i went to another doctor. the other doctor was very sweet and told me that it needed to come out. so i had the surgery and now i feel so much better. my doctor is very good. a lot of people i know go to her. she is affiliated with LIJ. if you want her info, FM me

Re: uterine fibroid?

The doctor is full of it. Fibroids are BENIGN tumors. How old is your mother anyway? Fibroids often shrink in menopuase and if a woman is close to menopuse when she finds out, she may just wait it out and they shrink, no big deal.

I had fibroid surgery in 2003. I had multiple large fibroids. The doctor who found them tried to scare me into booking an immediate surgery. Truth was I had all the time in the world to find the right doctor. The only reason that I got them when I did was because they were growing rapidly, starting to press on my bladder and bowel, and degenerating (a benign but painful situation).

Re: uterine fibroid?

I didn't get the impression that it was serious when they found one on my falopian tube while doing my c-section. My doctor removed it and he told me that in a couple of years it probably would have started to cause some pain and i would of needed surgery to remove it, but it was nothing serious. I was kind of glad they removed it for me.

ETA - I never felt anything, but then again i don't think it was big enough yet.

Good luck!!
