Update- APPROVED! Q for Working Moms...if you could work 4 ten hour days would you?

I'm about to start pursuing this with my job for personal reasons. But before I do I just want to make sure I weigh pros and cons.

Would you do it and why or why not? More importantly, what do you see as the cons because maybe there is something I'm not thinking about?

Thanks!

Update - so I pursued today and it was approved...so I'll now work tues - fri in the office and make up the time throughout the week. I'll probably come in at 8, continue to work at night after DS goes to sleep, and stay late on thursday since MIL has DS. Not a big change workwise for me so I'm psyched! This is a big deal for a conservative company like mine!

The only reason I would say no is if those 10 hour days meant I wouldn't see DD on those days.

I know if I work more than an hour OT now I don't get to put DD to bed. If $$ wasn't tight I would NEVER work OT, or at least not as often as I do.

YES because I do, well kinda. I work for myself, and I work 3 days a week usually 9-10 hours a day. When it is busy, I do up to 12 hours. I totally think it is worth it to have the extra days with my family. I really do not see a down side, other than being tired. Once your working, what's 2 extra hours a day, to get another day off?

Lisa, how much of a commute is there on either end of the 10 hour work day?

I think that might play into my answer!

YES, YEs, YES!

Pros for me personally:
I am already out of the house 9 hours minimum anyway.

My typical day is 9-5. BUT I can start anywhere from 7am - 9am. It varies day to day and I don't know till the day before what time I need to be in at.

SO if I worked say 8am-6pm.....I am not missing much more of DS's day! Also...my start time would only vary by 1 hour not 2.

If I work OT.....which is required not optional......and the OT is MOST days.....it really wouldn't change my day much.

I would save 1 more day on babysitting also!!

I personally would do it in a heartbeat!

As long as I could work like 8-6pm then I would do it in a heartbeat...if it was any later it would mean that I wouldn't get to see my DD before she goes to bed and I only get to see for my 30min commute to my ILs in the morning. I woudl give up those 30mins (my DH would drive her there so she doesn't have to get up earlier) to have 3 full days off with her.

And I agree with a PP...it depends on what your commute is and what hours you would be working.

For me the hours would have to be 8 to 6 for it to work as I have to pick up DS by 6:30, otherwise this would work for me.

For me the hours would not work. I would get home two hours later since preschool starts at 9 am and I am the only one home in the morning. If I had to work until 7 pm, I would get home at 7:30 and they go to bed at 8. My kids are home 1/2 the day with DH though so they are getting time with Daddy which is great and it would save us 4 hours of daycare. If I could go in at 8 and not take a lunch that might work, but then again I like the hour to myself in the middle of the day to get stuff done for myself.

Yes, I would definitely do it if all other factors (mainly childcare) worked out with that kind of schedule.

In a heartbeat! I already work around 9 hours a day with no lunch or break but I have no commute and am home with my DC around 4:30- 5pm. IF the day started early enough so I could see my kids for at least an hour at night I would do it for sure!

wanted to add that because I work out of my house and DD's are watched at my home by family, this is easier for me. When I stop for lunch, it is with them, dinner is with them and no matter how late I work there is always time for, at bare minimum a kiss goodnight. I AM VERY LUCKY for someone that has to work.

Re: Q for Working Moms...if you could work 4 ten hour days would you?

I'll add some facts...my current workday is 8:30-5. Commute is between 20 and 30 minutes. I eat lunch at my desk.

I can feasibly get here at 8am as long as I start to become efficient in the morning like I used to be. Daycare opens at 7am so childcare in the morning isn't an issue. If I drop DS off by 7:30 I can get here at 8am. They close at 6pm and DH can get DS at daycare. I always pick him up because i like to talk to the teachers about how his day went.

Truth is I generally work 50-60 hours per week anyway. But mostly I work all of my "OT" (unpaid) at night after DS goes to sleep and on weekends but from home.

I kind of think this is a no brainer for me because I have some flexibility (i think) to work some of it after hours but won't know for sure until I run it past my boss' boss. HR is already on board with it. I don't see spending any less quality time with DS.

I would! I work at a college and the school makes us do this in the summer, we work mon-thurs and have fridays off since the school is closed on fridays. Having a 3-day weekend is the best! I'd do it all yr round if they'd let us.

Lisa, for me, if you could still drop Matthew off at daycare in the mornings, work 8-6 and have Vinnie pick Matthew up from school, I would definitely do it. To have an entire day off with him each week would be worth it to me. You'd still get home by 6:30 and see him before he goes to bed.

Re: Update- APPROVED! Q for Working Moms...if you could work 4 ten hour days would you?

I used to do 4 x 10 hour days when I went back to work after DS was born. I was off Wednesdays... I went in to work at 7am and left at 5:30 on the other 4 days. I LOVED IT! Enjoy your extra day with DS!

Congrats! I would do that too - esp if I could work after DD goes to bed- which I do anyway. You will see such a huge change having that one day a week home!

Re: Update- APPROVED! Q for Working Moms...if you could work 4 ten hour days would you?

Im glad it got approved

I work four 9.5 hour days Im a paralegal at a law firm. I work 730-530 (except on Wednesdays) with half hour lunches Seamus goes to daycare at 7 am (its 2 blocks from work) and the other 2 days he goes to my parents. I still get time to feed him dinner, bath him and play for a while. Plus Wednesdays is our day together to do stuff

I get up at 520 every morning but Im used to it so its not that bad. Plus I can work from home once in a while and I bring OT home when Seamus is sleeping so I dont miss the extra 2 hours of pay/work
