Trying CIO out tonight for the 1st time-- very nervous!!!

My DH has decided that we are going to try CIO, even though I don't really want to. I am going along with it, though, bc it is worth a try. I really need to hear some success stories so I am motivated to go through with it!

Well what are the reasons you are doing CIO is it for going down or staying asleep? Maybe that can help offer you tips! Chat Icon

Re: Trying CIO out tonight for the 1st time-- very nervous!!!

we started cio when dh switched to working the overnght.... it is really helpful with the middle of the night stuff... which actually i started since i wa alone... and really how i started was that i would go to the bathroom and what not proir to reporting for duty and found that he did fall back asleep....

bedtime has been 75% successful but better as he got older...

naptime is a whole different story.... as he just is to active and never wants to nap

Re: Trying CIO out tonight for the 1st time-- very nervous!!!

CIO saved my sanity for putting my DD down to sleep.

To make a long story short, I made the huge mistake of having my mom watch DD when I went back to work last school year. She did basically the opposite of what I asked her to do. She got my DD used to being rocked to sleep, which is something I can't do physically, due to a bad back.

We did CIO for about 3 nights at night. The first night was the hardest...but she only cried about 15 minutes and then fell asleep. The next night, she only cried for 5 minutes. The 3rd night, she whimpered and complained for a few minutes, but never cried.

If it works for you, it'll be the best thing you ever did. Promise! Chat Icon

It was one of the hardest things I had to do as parent so far, but after about a week DS was sleeping 12 hours a night. He sleeps 7 pm-6:30/7AM since 5.5 months old. ITs hard but does get easier each night and it works.

Thanks! She is crying right now and so hard not to go to her. Chat Icon
She goes to sleep fine, but always wakes up numerous times a night and we don't sleep anymore, so i know it has to be done.

Re: Trying CIO out tonight for the 1st time-- very nervous!!!

we did it with DD at 7 months old (we waited way too long, would've done it at 5 months but had vacations planned so we pushed it back) and have had much much success!! she was waking up every two hours, nurse and go right back to sleep. we let her CIO for the first night and she really didn't scream + cry so much as just whine. the 2nd night she woke up once i think? maybe twice. the 3rd night she woke up just once and ever since then it's been bliss! she goes down for 12 hours without a peep. the most important thing to remember is that she won't remember any of this tomorrow...she won't hold a grudge towards you so STICK TO YOUR GUNS and get this over with!

Re: Trying CIO out tonight for the 1st time-- very nervous!!!

It didn't go so well... She cried for like 40 minutes at first, and was in such hysterics that I couldn't take it, so I went in, nursed her, and she went back to sleep until 1 am. Then, same thing-- cried for 30 minutes, then wiggled herself up so far taht she hit her head against the crib rails! So I went in and rocked her back to sleep. Then she woke up again at 3, I turned down the monitor, and she cried for 45 minutes, and then I gave up at that point, brought her in my room and put her in the pack n play and she slept until 7:30. Hopefully tonight will be better!

Just so you know, you can't give in. You're just going to teach her that she only has to cry for 30-45 minutes before you come in. Chat Icon

I know it's hard, but if you're going to do it... you have to do it 100% and not give in. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

i was just going to say this..you really cant go in and nurse her because its counter productive..
i know it SOUNDS bad, but its crying..all babies do it you have to remind yourself..after the first 3 nites of just letting her go, you WILL have a better sleeper..trust me..
right now she has no idea how to rely on herself to comfort herself back to sleep..shes relying on you for soemthing she should be doing on her own..shes gotta figure it out,,but if you go in, she never will..ya know?
FM me if you have any questions or need some support..ive done this with 2 dc's (my second one being harder for me) and ill be doing it again im sure in a few months lol

This is one of the hardest things you will do as a mother. But, babies will adapt quickly. You will be happy you did this!

Good Luck....

Thanks-- I know I have to do it, I am just having a hard time! I keep thinking that she is crying for a reason-- hunger, pain, night terrors, etc, and that she needs me. I am going to actually do it tonight, though. Thanks for the support!

Re: Trying CIO out tonight for the 1st time-- very nervous!!!

We only did it with DS. He would go to sleep fine, but wake up a million times a night. It was hard at first, but it only took a few days and then he was sleeping!
Now he usually will go down and wake up around 5, when I will feed him and put him back in the crib, where he will sleep until about 7. Every once in awhile, if he wakes up during the night, we just let him cry until he falls back asleep.
The only exception is when he is teething, and I know that is different because his crying is different, and he inconsolable. However, after the tooth has broken through, we have to do CIO again!

This is the problem i have -- I have been told that she is teething, but it has been weeks now and still no tooth. Should i do CIO even though she is supposedly teething? Or should I wait until the tooth comes through?

Re: Trying CIO out tonight for the 1st time-- very nervous!!!

We did CIO at 8 months and it only took her about 2 days to understand that we weren't coming in to get her.

She didn't really have a problem going to sleep but she was sitll waking in the middle of the night at least once a night.

Just as an example DD was "teething" from 8 weeks on. Would droll a ton, always chewing on things, cranky...etc. She didn't get her first tooth until almost 10 months old.

No, I wouldn't wait. Teething does not take weeks. When they are teething, I can feel the tooth breaking through the gums. It only takes a day or two to break through and then they are fine again.

Re: Trying CIO out tonight for the 1st time-- very nervous!!!

I didnt feel comfortable doing CIO until DS was 12 months. But it was a HUGE success after the 2nd night.
First night he cried for 1 hr 15 minutes then passed out and slept right through.
Second night for about 20-30 minutes
Third night didnt wake up.

My advice is to be strong and get a video monitor. Once you commit dont go in unless you HAVE to because I know my thinking was that if I went in after 45 minutes then my DS woudl just learn that if he kept crying eventually I would come!

GL!
