Today I'm putting on my big girl panties, sucking it up and going to...**UPDATED - I'm back!!!!
...the dentist for a cleaning and some fillings.
You have no idea how I am struggling with this. I have picked up the phone twice to cancel this morning but hung up. My phobia is THAT bad.
I am such a baby. Please tell me I'm going to be o.k.   
**UPDATE**
It wasn't bad at all - I'm a very lucky girl. Considering I haven't been to the dentist in a very long time (I won't even tell you how long because it is embarrassing) I have 3 cavities - which are because my fillings are old. He fixed 2 today and I have to go back for 1 one on the other side next month.
In the meantime, I need to go get my bottom wisdom teeth pulled. I have been having some pain going from my ear to my jaw to my tooth (this is what prompted me to go) and it turns out my wisdom tooth is decayed almost down to the nerve - and he said I might as well have the other one pulled too while they're in there.
Yes, I will be getting knocked out for that one.

trust me i KNOW how you feel!! i refused to go for YEARS cause of my fear. I needed crown work. my dentist just gave me a TON of gas and i was fine.

I honestly haven't gone for routine checkups in years either. I've managed to pull it off because my teeth look pretty good from the front - it's what's going on in the back that's not good.

I have a HUGE fear of dentists. I put it off so long that I needed 3 crowns. However, I found a dentist absolutely love and it makes it so much easier to go. It's over in 10 SECONDS and then you're numb and don't feel anything. Good luck!

I'll admit it. I'm a freak. I go to the dentist every 6 months. I have big teeth & really can't spare losing them.
Go. Definitely go. The longer you put it off, the worse it will get. You only get one set of adult teeth in your lifetime. Make sure you keep them.

same here, I did not go for over 5 years 
I found an amazing new dentist here in Charlotte and evertime I go in for anything more than a cleaning, he says "pump up the gas"

Why thank you!!! I'm telling you, nobody is a bigger baby than me. I have to say I am quite proud of myself today - even if was just a visit to the dentist!!!
I searched all the "recommend your dentist" threads on here and I have to thank those of you who recommended Dr. LaCarrubba's office in Stony Brook! He's on vacation so I had to see Dr. Wender - he was great and the ladies in the office were so nice!

Doesn't it feel great to finally get it over with??! congrats!
I did the same thing a couple years ago... I neglected my teeth and found out I had a few bad cavities and needed my wisdom teeth out....
since you're local, I should mention there is a very good oral surgeon that removed my wisdom teeth... Dr. Dominger (on 347 just east of rt 112)
It went very smoothly, especially since I had all 4 out at once, and 2 were impacted.
Now I learned my lesson and go to the dentist religiously for my cleanings and check-ups... I even got DH to get back to the dentist
