To or not to schedule High risk obgyn

iI had an appointment with my OBGYN today. I was a good appointment! She took some blood in order to screen me for possible genetic markers. We talked about taking a multi vitamin immediately, my HA1C's (3 month average glucose reading) and where it needs to be before I TTC, and diabetic pregnancy complictions.

Here's the thing...I LOVE my OBGYN...she is friendly, calming, and approachable...two days ago I was reconnecting with an old friend who said she had gestational diabetes with her daughter...she recommended her high risk dr who is often meantioned on these boards...she said in her appointments she sees the OBGYN and then goes across the way and meets with the endocronologist....a one stop shopping approach if you will...now that got me thinking...

I have an OBGYN & a new endocronologist (who I do like). The way I'm doing things right now involves making two appointments, visiting two towns (most likely 2 different days), and I pay two copayments.

Part of me thinks that maybe it would be appealing to have it all taken care of in one visit. Do you think I should make an appointment with this high risk obgyn and see if I like him? Having had diabetes for 14 years do you think I should be going with the high risk obgyn anyway?

Sorry this is so long. I'm just having a lot of anxiety and I'm not even pregnant yet. I'm just trying to get all my ducks in a row beforehand to ease with the transition when & if I get a BFP.

TIA!

I see what you mean, but I would ask your OB whether they would recommend a high risk when PG. I wasn't sure if I was going to need one, but as long as you have two doctors that you like that are managing your condition, I don't personally think you need one-JMO though based on my doc-I would definitely ask yours first!

If you are concerned about your co-pays you can have the discussion with your ob/gyn and/or endocrinologist and see if they would not take the co-pay from you.

You should consider some things though: Do you want to go to someone entirely new who does not know your body when you are going to have your baby? If I was in your situation I would stay with the current ob/gyn since she knows the medical history and any issues that could arise in your pregnancy. Also, I think she will refer you to a high risk ob/gyn if she feels it is necessary.

Good luck with whatever you decide

not sure what kind of insurance you have...but usually once you are an OB patient you don't have co-pays anymore so if that's your major concern and reason for leaving i would double check. if it's the traveling and 2 separate appointments it would hurt to make and appointment and see if you are comfortable with the new practice. Once you get your BFP you'll have to get used to going to the doc...a lot...lol so convenience is important too...at least in MHO.

edt: also if having GD is a major concern then making a relationship with a high risk ob may be in your best interest too...this way you don't have to switch mid way Chat Icon

Ladies thank you for your advice. I decided I want to make an appointment with the high risk obgyn & endo. I rather meet both of them and then make my decision.
