Throwing Out Formula

If my DD does not finish a bottle, I will dump it out. You know how it says you can't use it if it's been out past an hour?

My cousin came over today and told me that I was crazy for throwing it away. She told me I should put the bottle back in the refrigerator until her next feeding. She said that she wouldn't use it for the next day, but she would definitely use it for her next feeding.

She also said that she had used bottles that had been out over an hour. Her kids are older now.

I am curious about what others do.

Re: Throwing Out Formula

For the most part we didn't use it again.

I was told that the baby's saliva can cause the breakdown of the formula

But, I would sometimes use it if only a little bit was drank from it.

Sometimes if it was out for 1 1/2 -2 hours, I might use it.

Re: Throwing Out Formula

we have a 2 hour rule..... we make formula... he drinks 60% within a half hour and then passes out.... we get it in the fridge 15 min later.... we declare the bottle "45 min old".... so if we take it out later that day, we'll say it has an hour left before it has to be pitched.

we generally DON'T make more formula in the old bottle, though... we use a new bottle... so DS goes through a lot of bottles every day (maybe 6?)Chat Icon

Re: Throwing Out Formula

Kristina would have bottles w/i 2 hours of having them if they were untouched.

If she started to drink out of them, once the hour passed, they were in Dump City.

End of story....

Re: Throwing Out Formula

sometimes if my DD were to only take a tiny bit from the bottle I would put it in the refrigerator for later but honestly never really used it. I just threw it out. I would maybe go a few minutes over an hour but I definetly never did more than 2 hours after a bottle has been sitting out.

Re: Throwing Out Formula

We'll go up to an hour and a half once started (it is very rare my little moose doesn't finish a bottle) but I never re-refridgerate and give later.

Re: Throwing Out Formula

I was always told to never re-refrigerate because of the bacteria that will grow in the formula after they have drank from the bottle. They told us this at the hospital. It is very rare now a days for him not to drink most of the bottle but in the beginning I used to let it sit out for up to 1 1/2 hours before dumping it.

Re: Throwing Out Formula

The can of formula says do not use it past 2 hours. So if DS doesn't finihs it and wants it later as loing as it's within the 2 hours I give it to him otherwise after 2 hours its thrown out.

Same but with a 2 hour rule of thumb
