Thoughts on hiring somebody to teach DD to ride a bike

My DD is extremely difficult with us when she can not do something. She desperately wants to ride a 2-wheeler. I'm considering hiring a guy, who's ad I saw in a Parenting magazine to teach her. He said it usually takes 2-4 lessons, and it is $80 per lesson.

If it's worth it to you then for sure! Hopefully it won't take long and she'll be riding around, happy as a clam!!

Agreed. I know some (ok, most) kids will listen to someone else before their parents so you have a much better chance she'll follow his directions!Chat Icon

I was this way as a kid. Just bc my parents told me, they were automatically wrong and of course didn't know anything, so I am gonna be in for it with my boys.Chat Icon

Personally I wouldn't spend my money on that. You don't have an older niece nephew aunt uncle etc who your child looks up to that would be able to help you out one day?

Out of principal for not listening I wouldn't hire them.

If I saw that she was a really trying and you guys were really trying and she just wasn't grasping it, then I would.

But, I think your DD is a lot like my DS and there is no way I would hire some one for him.

No, I would not hire someone. It may take you a few extra times to show her before she gets it, but its something you can take pride in when you are done teaching her.

I agree--except I don't think I would ever pay THAT much. Seriously, he'd better be teaching her to walk on water as well for $80/lesson!!!!!

But, listen to this...my DD taught herself this spring. Herself. As in we did nothing. Here's how it happened... We took the pedals off her bike--I think the theory is that the children can focus on balance and gliding without getting all tangled up trying to pedal simultaneously. Out of laziness or busy weekends or whatever, we finally ended up putting them back on like two months later. I walked into the house for about 90 seconds when my younger DD came in yelling, "She's riding her bike! She's riding it!!"

And that was it! Now she's riding all over the place! Try it. Let me know if it works and if so, I'll send you my bill for $40--it's a 50% savings. Chat Icon

My DS is very difficult too. I tried to help him but he just wouldnt listed and didnt learn until 9. Id just bring her to an empty flat field, maybe with friends or siblings and have a picnic. No other toys, just the bike.

I thnk that guy has a lot of freakin' nerve charging $80 a lesson to teach a kid to ride a bike !!!!

What about an Aunt/Uncle/Grandparent - or even an older cousin or friend's kid?

My 3 year old LOVES to be included in the big boys stuff and will listen to ANYTHING his older cousins try to teach him .......

Re: Thoughts on hiring somebody to teach DD to ride a bike

I think riding a bike is something that they just do when they want to and are ready.

My niece wouldn't let any one touch her training wheels when we tried to teach her. But DH just lifted them up, so they would only touch if she started to lean.

Just this week, she just got on the bike and did it. She rode for quite a distance and turned around and the training wheels never touched the ground.

Now she wants them off.

She will get it when she is ready.
