Those who have worked in Catholic Schools..

I am looking for the approx salary range for a teaching position...I have an interview on Wed and of course I want to go regardless of the $$. But it would be really nice to know what the range was.

If anyone feels comfortable or knows this info, could you FM me? I am in NJ, not in NYC or LI but I am sure it's comparable.

Re: Those who have worked in Catholic Schools..

I just did a web search and found this:

Starting salaries for full-time elementary and secondary teachers in the schools of the Paterson, N.J., diocese will be raised to $26,000 and $29,000 for the 2006-2007 academic year.

Re: Those who have worked in Catholic Schools..

I would definitely say high 20's to low 30's, max. Catholic schools do not pay well at all, unfortunately.

Yeah that's around what I thought. I have no problem if it is in the low 30s...I can make extra with after school stuff and tutoring but the issue will be with convincing DH Chat Icon

Hopefully it goes well! Wish me luck Chat Icon

Re: Those who have worked in Catholic Schools..

I worked in Catholic schools a long time ago, and not in this area, but salaries are considerably lower than in public school. Generally, though, elementary school salaries are lower than HS.

Also, it may depend on who actually runs the school. Diocesean school salaries are usually lower than schools run by religious orders (like Jesuits, Christian Brothers, etc.) I worked in HS and the salaries could differ greatly depending on the socioeconomic backgroud of the student body, whether or not it was a college prep school, and who ran the school.

Good luck!

Re: Those who have worked in Catholic Schools..

I interviewed at some Catholic schools and was offered as low as 18K a yearChat Icon and as high as 26K (still a Chat Icon ). I ultimately ended up with a job in an independent school. They pay considerably more. I would look up and see if there is a website for the independent schools in NJ. We have www.nysais.org in ny. I'm sure there's something like that for NJ. Good luck!

Re: Those who have worked in Catholic Schools..

I worked in Catholic School on Long Island for 3 years before making the change to NYC because I needed more money. My first year I made 17K, second year we got a "big raise" and made 20K, 3rd year I moved up a pay step and made 21K.

I moved to NYC and work in what some would consider the ghetto and made my way up to 46k. Being a teacher ***** sometimes in the pay department....we definately don't do it for the $$$$$!

Re: Those who have worked in Catholic Schools..

I worked in Queens at a Catholic School for 6 years. I started at mid 20's and by my 6th year I was making mid 30's. TOTALLY not enough money to live on. The parents and children were wonderful. If the pay was the same as public school, I'd never leave.

Re: Those who have worked in Catholic Schools..

Lots of schools hire late in August when they find out that teachers aren't coming back or something comes up.

I sometimes regret taking my catholic school job, but at least you're getting experience. If you do take the job, keep you resume circulating around.

Re: Those who have worked in Catholic Schools..

I say take ANYTHING you can get in this job market. Even if you keep the job just to make some money while searching for something new. You're better off having a full time teaching job on your resume than subbing. But I'd really look into independent schools if I were you.

Re: Those who have worked in Catholic Schools..

Ok, I just found this: NJAIS

It's the NJ equivalent of NYSAIS. I sent my resume to every, single school that was within my driving distance when I was looking for a teaching job and I got about 8 or 9 phone calls from it that August. I would just do the same. Send it everywhere. I even put in my cover letter to keep my resume on file and I got phone calls for a year after that.

ETA: They have job listings on there, too.

Re: Those who have worked in Catholic Schools..

DH's cousin had the same problem. He ended up taking the salary cut for 1 year. The following year he got hired by a district because he had experience. If you can afford to do it, you might want to make the sacrifice for a year to gain some experience at the Catholic school.

Good luck!

Re: Those who have worked in Catholic Schools..

I think it would be worth it to take a Catholic school job to get the experience. Full time teaching experience can only help you if you are looking to get a public school job eventually, and many people go that route.

Re: Those who have worked in Catholic Schools..

I just wanted to say good luck!!! I worked in a catholic school for 3 years and I loved every minute of it. I would have never left if it wasn't for the money...but if was great experience and it was a great environment to build experience and confidence as a teacher. Its well worth the salary to work in a nice environment. Good luck.
