Middle school teacher arrested on sex abuse charge

A Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School teacher who police sources said used a student instead of a CPR training dummy has been arrested on sexual assault charges.
Barry Goodman, 60, of 54 Wedgewood Dr., Coram, was released without bail after his arrest Saturday on misdemeanor charges of second-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child, Nassau police said.
Goodman -- a teacher since 1971 and a former principal of the all-girls Madonna Heights School in Dix Hills -- had been placed on administrative leave at Plainview-Old Beth.page before resigning recently, police said.
"So far in this investigation, we've been able to identify a victim where the teacher's behavior was criminal," said Det. Lt. John May of Nassau's Second Squad. He declined to discuss specific details, citing an ongoing investigation.
However, police sources said Goodman, a health teacher, was instructing a class on cardio.pulmonary resuscitation on his student before other students. Typically, CPR is taught using a dummy, which the school had on hand, the sources said.
Goodman couldn't be reached for comment. He's scheduled for a Dec. 29 hearing at First District Court in Hempstead.
Superintendent Martin Brooks referred all questions to school spokeswoman Danielle Blasi, who forwarded a statement, but declined further comment.
"The parents of all the students involved in the matter have been notified, and counseling has also been offered to the students involved," the statement read. "It would be inappropriate to comment further while the investigation is still under way."
On Dec. 8, police began investigating after several seventh-grade and eighth-grade boys and girls told school officials that Goodman had been touching them inappropriately since September.
The students complained that he stroked their hair, rubbed their backs and caressed their arms, May said.
Goodman, who police said has no criminal background, is the former principal of Madonna Heights School, a private, live-in facility for girls with emotional and special education problems

It will be quite a shame if this turns out to be nothing.
It will ruin him either way.
I hope for everyone's sake the investigation turns up with nothing.
It will still have a significant impact though no matter what.

Even *if* he didn't do anything sexually inappropriate, he still put the kid's lives at risk. When I've taken CPR training, the instructor was explaining that what you do to start the heart beating could also cause it to stop, or get a weird rhythym if it's working fine. Plus, you could break a rib.
It says he resigned soon after he was reassigned, which isn't usually the path an innocent person takes....
