They have a suspect in the missing girl - Maddie...
LISBON, Portugal (AP) -- Police searching for a four-year-old British girl who disappeared almost two weeks ago in southern Portugal have placed a man under formal investigation, a news report said Tuesday.
Portugal's national news agency, Lusa, quoted unnamed police sources as saying the man was one of three people questioned late Monday after detectives and forensic experts searched a villa near the hotel from where Madeleine McCann was apparently abducted.
Police officials at national headquarters would not confirm the report nor name anyone under investigation.
Under Portuguese law, opening a formal investigation is a first step toward possibly bringing formal charges.
The legal measure is designed to safeguard a citizen's constitutional rights. It grants the person in question access to potential evidence and allows the person to mount a legal defense.
Lusa also reported that police took computers and mobile phones from the villa, which is about 100 meters from the Ocean Club holiday village in Praia da Luz where the toddler was apparently taken from her hotel room May 3.
Detectives questioned the three in Portimao, the nearest large town to Praia da Luz, Lusa reported.
The girl vanished after her parents left her, and her brother and sister, both aged 2, alone while they went to a nearby restaurant within their hotel complex. Last week, police called off their ground search.
Her parents are still at the hotel.
British media have said that promised contributions to a reward fund total some 2.6 million pounds ($5.1 million), including reported donations from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, tycoon Sir Richard Branson and "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell.
Also, celebrities including soccer star David Beckham have made public appeals for help in finding Madeleine.
Asked how long they would stay in Portugal, Kate McCann said, "I can't even consider going home at the moment, absolutely can't even let it enter my head."

ok....i don't get this:
The girl vanished after her parents left her, and her brother and sister, both aged 2, alone while they went to a nearby restaurant within their hotel complex.
is this something that is customary to do in that country? 
i hope they find her safe and in good health!

I'm with you. This sounds so bizarre. I have lots of family in Euroep and no one I know would leave a 4 year old to watch 2 2year olds.

Ok, here's my question....while I think it is GREAT that so many celebs are getting involved (David Beckham, Simon Cowell, etc.), why doesn't this happen with the thousand of kids in the United States that disappear every year? Why are they helping this particular girl in Portugal?

she is British and they are Bristish? that's my best guess

That is what I would like to know. I hope this girls is safe, but we all know that thousands od kids go missing every year in this country.
I can't believe her parents left the kids alone in a hotel room.

ahh...I missed that she is British...
Yeah, they are British. The crazy thing to me is that they are both doctors so they are obviously well educated and should have known to hire a babysitter from the hotel or whatever. I feel awful for them, they must be beating themselves up.

See, I'm not so much curious about why the celebs, British or not, are getting involved, but why is this worldwide news? I'm not trying to sound inconsiderate here, but why are we hearing about this missing British girl? Were they (people in Europe and other countries) being informed when Elizabeth Smart disappeared? I'm just curious about this...
With that said, I think this is a terrible tradgedy that I pray has a happy ending.

Its a big case because she is a white middle class good looking child. Her parents are both doctors, her dad is a heart surgeon. They were on holiday in a posh resort, they went to dinner 50 yards away, left 3 kids sleeping in a hotel room, went back to check on them every 30 minutes. They are so smart they left the kids in a hotel room. Thats brains for ya. I feel terribly for them, I really do. But step 1, don't leave the kids in a hotel room on their own. I do remember Elizabeth Smart's disappearance making the news here, when they have those big cases the do get publicised all over the world.
