There seems to be a problem with Brookhaven Animal Shelter
Apparently this shelter is putting animals down without properly evaluating them. This upsets me terribly for two reasons -
First, I live in the town so it bothers me that I am paying taxes towards this shelter.
Secondly, I called them recently and had them come and get a loose dog in my neighborhood. When I called to check on the dog, they told me it had been adopted - who knows if that's true now
Anyway, the point of this post is to ask everyone to sign this petition in order to change what is going on at the shelter. I beg of you all, if you love animals, please sign the petition. It only takes a minute....

I wondered if there would be any action taken re: that golden when I read the article.
Very disappointing though not surprising.

Brookhaven Shelter is terrible I had a friend who worked over there and the horror stories from there would reduce you to tears

Apparently a Golden was brought there in December as food aggressive. There were a few rescue groups who tried to get her out for either an evaluation and/or rehabilitation. The shelter wouldn't allow the rescues access to the dog and then after two weeks told the rescues that the dog had been evaluated by them and was euthanized.
Now, the dog could have been incurable, but to not even allow several rescues and a veterinarian access to the dog is intolerable IMO.

I adopted my dog from there and she was in the shelther for over 2 months. I'm glad she's with me now because she is just sweet as can be.

I don't think it's true. Check out their website, there are dogs that have been there for a while.

The only thing is - those dogs haven't changed at all since early December. I don't really get it, but I do know that the Retriever WAS euthanized. I belong to a LI based dog group and there have been a ton of emails regarding how they were trying to get her and Brookhaven wouldn't release her. I tried calling and they told me they were evaluating her...next thing you know she's been put down. That is fact.
The problem seems to be that there are two guys there who will take matters into their own hands when they feel like it and that just isn't appropriate.

Signed. I do think that the intro material to the petition should have a better description of the indiscretions, though. JMO. I think it would be stronger with more specific examples and less opinion. I'm not trying to be rude. I did sign, as I said.

Actually, I agree with you...it's one of the reasons I said in the first post to read the whole petition. They do not describe it very well in the introduction.
