Where do you stand on this issue?

I deeply respect my brother and he’s super smart (PHD). He’s pretty strongly in the camp of legalize everything - tax it and regulate it for purity.

I am for sure in favor of legalizing pot. I think it’s ridiculous to lock people up over this and just control it like alcohol.

I’m def not there yet with something like heroin or fentanyl, especially as they are addictive.

My brothers point is that the war on drugs is a disaster. It’s over, we lost. So much wasted effort, death, money and resources that could be deployed elsewhere. Drugs are here in the US and will never go away regardless of enforcement, prison terms etc. I think it does make sense to instead fight a war on the demand for drugs (better mental health care, support for families and single working parents, education, etc) but I don’t know....

I don't have any issues legalizing pot, I don't see how it is any worse than liquor.

I don't know where I stand with the other drugs but I do think your brother makes an interesting point.

Marijuana should be legalized if alcohol is legal. But heroin is way too dangerous. No way can that be used responsibly. You don’t see people overdosing on weed and and dying from it, but you do with opiates...

100% I agree. We already have enormous issues with drugs like heroin in pretty much all areas. I can’t even imagine how much worse it’d be if they give it the green light!

Marijuana I wouldn’t have an issue, as long as there are regulations. Cuomo is looking to legalize it, I wonder what regulations he’ll implement?

Weed should definitely be legal. You can’t overdose on weed and it’s no worse than alcohol or even cigarettes.

Not ok with giving the green light on hard drugs like herion or Cocaine or pills. How would you even regulate that. I get you can get a bad batch and die but there is no way controlling how much a person uses. Making it legal will just cause more people especially kids to do it. My brother died of a herion overdose legalizing it and regulating would have not helped him! He tried to quit many times its way to addictive!

Not a fan of legalization - with the exception of medical use marijuana

I’m sorry about your brother. Chat Icon

It’s an interesting conversation I think. I don’t have the answers.

Re: The war on drugs vs legalization

I think most people separate marijuana and "hard drugs" for most of their opinions.

I think marijuana should be legal at a Federal level, and treated just like alcohol.

Right now, I can't get on board with legalizing the hard drugs. I also haven't done extensive research on the pros and cons, so with the information I do have, it makes sense to keep heroin, cocaine, LSD, etc illegal.

I'm in favor of legalizing marijuana and collecting tax revenue on it and treating it like alcohol. Especially legalizing for medical use. I don't think hard drugs should be legalized.

Re: The war on drugs vs legalization

I am in favor of legalizing marijuana. Hard drugs I think should not be legalized, but I also think punishment for drugs should be looked at and revamped.

However, if they do or do not legalize “soft” drugs, they need to improve health care for addictions. Alcohol is legal and rehab and methods for quitting are expensive and the main method (AA) is not very effective at all.

I’m for marijuana being legalized as the pot “we” smoked back in the day is not the same today. I worry for the young kids who try it and it’s laced with who knows what.

But on the flip side, not sure how you deal with the testing as it stays in your system....how can you be sure your surgeon, your kids teacher, first responders, etc... are currently high while on the job.

Hard drugs....can’t get on board with that one.

How can you be sure they're not drinking on the job? It would still have to be regulated and employers can still administer random drug tests and enforce a zero tolerance policy.

Pot - yes, legalize it.

But the other drugs can kill you by overdose. What is your brothers perspective on addiction and overdose? I’m curious how can we legalize something so lethal. He does make a good point, so I was curious on his insight to this aspect of it.

100% in favor of legalizing marijuana. It never should have been illegal in the first place, not while people can drink. I've done both and alcohol affects me WAY more than smoking pot ever has.

Hard drugs? Nope. I don't think there's any benefit to legalizing them. People will still be addicted and overdosing in droves. I don't think it will increase it, but I don't see how it could decrease it either.

I think his point is we are losing today. Overdoes and addiction are rampant. So by controlling purity so people know their dose and somehow controlling it - maybe more than alcohol (perhaps with a national registry, etc) could you prevent overuse?

I don’t think he believes full legalization is a perfect solution just that the current policies are clearly not working. So I guess it’s not a plan to end addiction or abuse but limit and control it better - reducing it because maybe elimination isn’t possible?

I wonder though - alcohol is addictive and we’ve all kind of accepted that. I think it’s interesting to think about. Good point that you can use moderate alcohol/pot but can’t really do moderate heroin without addiction.

But there are a lot of benefits. I guess we will learn a lot from Oregon actual experience. I haven’t made up my mind yet.

This ties into the criminal view - we treat addicts as criminals instead of sick.
