The music we listen to

Kinda along the same grain as comedy, but I listen to the sounds of the 50's - 80's

Question - -when did listening to music, where you can hardly understand the words or the meaning become enjoyable?

How do people like Eminem make a living?

Re: The music we listen to

I am a big fan of music. I listen to Simon&Garfunkel, Bob Marley, Nina Simmone, Eminem. I do think that music today too has lost its flavor. This is why I love XM. It lets me listen to the old stuff & the new unheard of artists that get no radio play.

Re: The music we listen to

Well, just because one person cannot understand the words, does not mean someone else can't. Also, I think with a lot of music, it has nothing to do with words. Look at how classical music can affect people, but that has no words.

DH and I talk about this all the time. I don't feel like there are any "super groups" anymore - bands that would put out hit after hit and album after album and who had major longevity. I feel like so much now is just tons of one hit wonders. Thank G-d for my iPOD!!

Re: The music we listen to

I'll add that I equate the music situation these days with what was going on in the early 90s. Just total crap. But I still maintain that some people may find meaning in whatever is out there these days. Especially younger kids who use music as a tool for expressing themselves.

I understand Eminen's words.

As for not understanding the meaning I'm not really a fan of songs that just put it all out there & are really simple.

I enjoy trying to disect the imagery in decent lyrics.

See IMO-It's not about understanding his words literally it's about the meaning behind it all. I think he's a genius in his own right lyrically. But can his songs be any more violent????

My taste in music has changed in the past decade. Although I'm not a big fan of rap and can't speak to the Eninem song, I was never really sure what Bob Dylan was saying...

Not all of them are violent.
ANd actually, I think we were agreeing. Chat Icon

I think he is a talented writing & a lot of that is overshadowed by controversy. He lyrics have also matured over the years.

My comment about not liking straight fowarward simple lyrics was not abotu Eminen. I meant more like songs from the 50 & 60's, that Don was comparing to current music.

Although there are plenty of simple stupid songs from any decade.

Chat Icon What? Rhyming fighting, lightning, frightning & timing isn't brilliant? Only Shaggy has ever dared rhyme like that since then!

Re: The music we listen to

For me, music became enjoyable when I started singing in the High School Choir. I had always loved music, but when I got to high school, I knew I wanted to be a part of something amazing. See, our high school choir was a legacy and we worked very hard at the craft, so to speak. We had a reunion concert every winter and about 30 years worth of alumni showed up and sang together, so the choir grew and grew and the songs we sang were hypnotic. After that, music became something different and I began to disect it, listening for new rhythms or melodies and I'd try to harmonize and study it. Now, it's about connecting it with a life moment or associating it with a memory. I think that music can be a soundtrack to your life, at least for me it is. I love jazz and the old standards. Music can make a moment or a day into something bigger than it is and to realize that power can change how we hear it or understand it. Sorry to ramble!
