The Amish and how they do things...A VEnt of sorts.

Maybe we should take notice of what the industrial revolution has done to our earth and bodies.

Maybe the amish have it right.

No cars, no wasteful electricity, they churn their own butter, make their own soaps, and dont' use preservatives since they grow and make most things from scratch.

Then we'd know exactly what we're breathing, eating, and washing with and what we're putting in and on our bodies and our kids.

I'm being totally sarcastic, maybe it's just my mood, but lately, not just LIF, i'm tired of hearing about poisons we've been ingesting, and the waste we create, the dangers around us caused by no one but ourselves and our need for a fast moving quick fix society.

Why not just go back to the 1700s and FARM for a living, trade your gas guzzling cars in, and start churning butter and whittling spoons on our porches and have a good old barn rising once in awhile.

I'm done now..

Re: The Amish and how they do things...A VEnt of sorts.

thought i would respond, telling u all this is my sisters plan...not to become amish, but to move out west, have their own animals for food and milk and garden their own stuff....

she already makes her own soap and lotion, and uses an all natural spray thing for cleaning the babies butts....

cloth diapers....organic detergent....organic everything....

pregnant with #7.....

and so yes, this is what she wants to do, but it is ultmately a religion thing- a Christian way of living...in the "end times" and all that stuff, when the value of the dollar is nothing and your cant just go out and GET milk or something like that, she wishes to be prepared for this time....

k, im done sharing what she does....

lol

A friend of mine has a cousin who lives up there and has a boy a little older than DS. She has this great blog full of all the wonderful stuff they do up there. I'm jealous.

Re: The Amish and how they do things...A VEnt of sorts.

A few years back I went on a Missions Trip to the outskirts of Costa Rica. It was a very small town with NOT a lot of material things. I loved how "simple" they made their lives. Not because they wanted to, but because they had to due to money.
It was nice not to have to "worry" about the stupid things we involve ourselves in. They would be happy to have a bike with 2 wheels, yet we cry when our overpriced SUV needs $60 worth of gas in the tank...
Just makes you think differently and I frankly liked it Chat Icon

I hear you--it does sound ideal. Farming is a hard life though. One of my friends grew up on a farm, and her whole family worked constantly. But living life in a simpler manner, with fewer chemicals present, does sound great. You really can't even be chemical free if you plant your own garden vegetables here since chances are, your neighbors use chemicals on their lawn and they will wash onto your veggies.

Another thing about today, I think the isolation in communities today also bothers me. I never really noticed it when I was working, but now that I'm home with DS, I realize I barely know any of our neighbors, and most of them I rarely see to get to know. Eveyrone is off working, and they have to do this, but I wish I knew people around me a little better.

Re: The Amish and how they do things...A VEnt of sorts.

I think we think back to the nostolgic part of it, yes it was simpler life, more family time, less chemicals to worry about.

But you also would have to get up at 4am and not stop til the sun went down. Anyone ever try to churn butter? It's alot a work. I think we all have these modern conveniences for very good reasons, but i have to ponder what we traded off for these conveniences.

In reality i could never go back on live the farm life, yes I WOULD love the simplicity of life back then, but No thank you-goes back to my whole animal dung thing to start with...

What worries me when i think about it too much is what we put into our bodies and what i serve my kids could be hurting us and them in the future.
I just can't think about it anymore, I wouldn't sleep at night.

But i do love my modern medicine and technological advances that countless times have saved my family members lives and treated common diseases that years ago killed hundreds.

Re: The Amish and how they do things...A VEnt of sorts.

I see your point about the Amish but ever since I started to read about puppy mills, I have lost some respect for the Amish. In their culture, dogs are treated more as property than as a living beings. They think it's unsanitary to have a dog living in the home. They breed for profit and their tactics are less than humane. I grew up going to the Amish country often and I did not realize what was going on. I do not want to turn this into a discussion like the ones on the pet board but I wanted to explain why my thoughts about the Amish culture have changed. I am sure that not every Amish person treats dogs poorly but the Amish do have a different value system when it comes to animals. I think you can google Amish puppy mills for some examples.
