Re: Did anyone have to re-home a pet due to severe pet allergies?

We just had to rehome out cat bc DS was severely allergic to him, chronic hakcing cough, his eyes literally swelled shut! It was so sad to see him like that, but also heartbreaking we had to rehome our cat. In the end you do whats best for your DC, but it doesnt make it any easier. We kept out cat until we found him a good home, I refused to put him in a shelter. In the meantime, we limited the rooms he could be in and bought air purifiers.

I took about 2-3 months after the cat was gone for DS to return to normal and clear out all the dander. We changed ALL the bedding in the house, all the curtains, decorative pillows, had the carpets and furniture professionally cleaned.

Im so sorry!!!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Did anyone have to re-home a pet due to severe pet allergies?

Not because of allergies, but my dogs fight every now and again. Thismorning they got into a brawl that I could not stop...they were biting eachother and I saw blood. Fortunatly DD was sleeping because I dont know what I would have done if she wasnt. So today Im an absolute mess and my friend is coming to pick up my boxer to give her a good home. Im an absolute wreck.
Edited to say: you need to do what is in the best interest of your DC, so dont feel bad. I cant imagine in my case her playing on the floor while this was going on, she would have been hurt. Although its killing me, I have to do it. There is a place called angels gate that takes in dogs with problems, you may want to look into it.

we may have to. depending on how DS allergy tests come back. One is on the way to my mother's tonight as she is starting to growl at the baby and has bitten in the past. (she was my mom's dog initially)

Kristin I am sorry you have to rehome your dog! Here in Northern Virginia there is a cocker spaniel rescue group called Oldies but Goodies (OBG) and they have info on their website if you need to give up/rehome your dog. You may want to call them to see if they can help you being you are up in NY or if they have any similar organizations in your area! Here is their link:

Re: Did anyone have to re-home a pet due to severe pet allergies?

We had to rehome my cats when my DD was diagnosed with a cat allergy. I was extremely lucky that my parents were able to take them in.

Sorry you are dealing with this- it's a terrible predicament. As much as I adore my furbabies, my children's health comes first which is why rehoming was my only option.Chat Icon

Maria, thank you tons.
I was referred to Abandoned Angels
Ugh, the name makes my heart ache. But this place sounds amazing. They will find him a good forever home regardless of his temperament. They will also see to his health issues. Im looking at his big brown eyes right now and Im sick to my stomach, but between my SS's allergies and his increasing aggression, I know I can't take any chances.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Did anyone have to re-home a pet due to severe pet allergies?

I don't envy your postion at all. What a terrible situation to be in. I feel terrible for you, just terrible. I can read the pain in your post. I am an animal lover, and I also have a DH with bad allergies/asthma so I know what that is like.

Do you have any family members that would take him? At least that way you could still see him and he can remain a part of your extended family. We have hypoallergenic dogs but if they even bothered DH or DD (hopefully she won't inherit his asthma/allergies) both sets of our parents said they would gladly take them, as they love them so much and promised us we would never have to rehome them from the family. But I am sure you already exhausted these options. I don't have advice, just Chat Icon
