Teacher's comment on Report Card re: DC Social-Emotional Development

My DC is a 1st grader and got her report card yesterday where she received a "2" for Social-Emotional Development which means she is below grade level. Her teacher's comments read: "Does not respect feelings, opinions, and property of others." I'm horrified 1st, but 2nd, don't you think that's a harsh statement for a teacher to make? This is the first I'm hearing of DC having issues in the classroom. I don't deny that she can be strong willed but to make that kind of statement and seems a bit disgusting. Am I overreacting? Should I contact the teacher? WWYD?

I agree that she could have worded that better. A "sometimes has trouble expressing her feelings" would have been better. But, I'd probably let it go and not say anything.

Re: Teacher's comment on Report Card re: DC Social-Emotional Development

The comments that I'm allowed to add to report cards are pre-written. I select from a list. Maybe that's why it's worded this way?

I have a 1st grader and don't find that comment "disgusting". I understand being upset by it but before I worry about the teachers wording I would find out what was going on with my kid.
I would request a meeting to find out what why the teacher feels that way and discuss ways to improve the behavior.

Not sure, but definitely a possibility. Didn't think of that!

I definitely want to learn more about what's happening so that I can work on her behavior. I just felt like the wording came off so angry but it could be that it's just pre-written. I just wish that if there were issues that she would have contacted me and not be surprised at report card time.

I don't think I would be offended by what the teacher wrote, but I would want to find out what is going on to make her write that.

It sounds like a canned message picked from a list.
I'm often amused when reading DC's report cards, because almost every teacher "says" the exact same thing, word for word... Chat Icon

I would try and contact the teacher to find out specifics so that you know how to address the issue properly.

Re: Teacher's comment on Report Card re: DC Social-Emotional Development

I'd be a little annoyed that the first I'm hearing of this about a 6/7 year old child is on a generic report card.
The teacher never brought it up before? An email. a phone call? Nothing?
THAT would annoy me more than her comment on the card, I don't think it's overly harsh -

I'd prefer honesty over sugar coating .........but IMO that kind of information is something I should have been spoken to about prior to getting a report card.

I agree. I'd be more annoyed that I wasn't notified sooner so I could try to help correct the behavior.
If you aren't made aware until a report card comes out, how are you expected to speak to your child and help them improve.?

This.

And yes, I am sure the comments are pre written.

I hope you are going to be willing to hear the teacher out and not come off in the defensive way you came off here.

When I taught we had a list of comments with codes. That comment sounds exactly like one I had as an option.

I agree with the people who said that you should not have been hearing about this for the first time now. I would ask the teacher why you have not had any contact with her over this. It is a pretty serious comment to make so I understand why you were upset. It's April. If this has been ongoing you should have been notified, and if it's recent, you also should have been notified. The teacher should be able to give you some pretty specific examples of the behavior.

And it's also possible, based on what I remember, that the teacher entered a code wrong. I know I did that once or twice- we had very odd sheets to fill in and making an error was pretty easy.

If it makes you feel better, as a teacher, that is the exact wording we have on my report cards. So it is almost certainly pre-written. I don't think it's disgusting, but I would want to know from the teacher what it means exactly for your daughter. Did that change from the last report card? If so, ask the teacher what was different. Then, I would ask her to keep in touch and let you know when things arise that would be considered "not respecting the feelings, opinions and property of others."

Teacher's comment on Report Card re: DC Social-Emotional Development

Thank you! I appreciate the feedback. I wrote a note to the teacher and asked if we could meet to discuss some of the behavior issues she noted so that I can work on them with my daughter. I do not want to raise a child that does not respect other people's feelings, opinions, or their personal property. This was the first that I am hearing this and it surprised me. I'm sensitive to this now and will be watching my DC closely.

Absolutely! I am not that parent that thinks their child is perfect. I just felt the comment was harsh the way it was written. I guess I would have preferred a little sugarcoating - lol.

Teacher's comment on Report Card re: DC Social-Emotional Development

If this is the first you are hearing of the issue, I'm wondering if it's a mistake. My DD had a 2 on her report card for listening and following directions or something. I was floored since she is a stellar student, and I had never had a single issue with her. I emailed the teacher and it was absolutely a mistake. The teacher said one wrong click, and it's an easy mistake to make.

Re: Teacher's comment on Report Card re: DC Social-Emotional Development

This is the standard language verbatim that appears on my kids report cards. You can get a 1 2 3 which let's you know if your kid is below, needs improvement or at grade level. I think your child's teacher used a drop down menu of language choices. If you have questions I would reach out to the teacher. Did you have parent teacher conferences yet?

We had the most ridiculous bubble sheets, though I quit 3 years ago so it may have changed. For example, if I was going to use a comment with the code 492, I would have to bubble in from the hundreds, then the tens, then the ones. It was a mess.

sounds like a code and/or error -

we had codes in 1 of my former districts, now all of our comments are hand typed (we have codes available but our school prefers a personalized report for parents)

Definitely find out if she hit the comment in error. If not, I'd be pretty upset with my child, not the teacher. That's a big deal!

Re: Teacher's comment on Report Card re: DC Social-Emotional Development

It's almost definitely a comment that was provided and not one written by the teacher.

That said, I think your anger is misplaced. I'd be very upset with my child, not the teacher.

You know what I think is disgusting? Comments from a drop down menu. Really schools should have the teachers take the time to write a few sentences for each child. I would also be very annoyed to get a harsh comment like that with zero previous mention of a behavioral issue.

should have been discussed before report card time. Could easily be a mistake.
