Teachers - did you get your schedule??

I am very happy!! My prep is 8th period and my duty is 9th! So I am done teaching after 7th Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am teaching 2 distinctly different things this year, but I knew about that - so I had plenty of time to get ready.

Re: Teachers - did you get your schedule??

I am teaching 3 different preps as well.

The way it worked out was that I am not teaching 2 of anything the same in a row.

Yes... And Band/Chorus and Orchestra are all at DIFFERNENT times, I feel like I NEVER have my kids at the same time Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I totally agree that having those options is important... but have them at the same time!

Our Monday's end at 1... And Chorus and Orchestra are both on Monday... I think I have a whole class for a total of 90 minutes that day. So we'll get math and spelling in. That should be uber effective.

Um, Mondays, I don't teach at all. Sounds good, huh? NOPE, because I STILL have to be at school and it leads me into my Tuesday and Thursday schedule where I teach non-stop from 8:30am-3:00pmChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
Then Wed. and Fridays suck, too, but not nearly as bad a Tue/ThursChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Sorry that happened with your schedule, but Band, Chorus and Orchestra are just as important as the other things you're teaching. They either have the same person teaching them or they don't have the space to hold all those children at the same time.
Plus, a lot of schools allow the kids to take more than one. Be grateful your school offers the kids those things because for some children, music is the only subject they feel successful in. Not to mention, it helps them with math, vocabulary, etc. You name it and I can tie it to music.Chat Icon

Oh, I totally agree that they're important... And the reason they do have them at different times is because they can take all of them. I'm just getting frustrated because between that, and all the other specials, GT, and the art program that they do, there are days I barely have them for instructional time... and I have to have everything taught by the 2nd week in May when we have our tests Chat Icon Chat Icon

My biggest gripe is having all this time when I'm going to have like 1/3 of a class. I want all or none Chat Icon I just wish like chorus were mandatory for all (like it was when I was in school) and then maybe band/orchestra were at the same time.

Right now I have an hour and 40 minutes on monday when I won't have a full class for chorus/orchestra... then an hour on friday for band, and an hour on Wednesday for GT Pullout.

My only 'normal' day is Tuesday!

Yeah, that has to be uber annoying! I know the teachers in my school complain about the same thing. For an elementary school child this is how many times they are out of the classroom each week:

Art 2x a week
Music/Chorus 2x a week
French 2x a week
Gym 3x a week
Computer 1x a week
Library 1x a week
Enrichment 1x a week
Band lessons 1x a week
Band 1x a week

Add to that Monday first period and Friday first period they have meetings, so that's 2x a week they miss first period.

Add in 5x a week for lunch.

Subtract all that from 40 periods a week
and classroom teachers get a total of 19 teaching periods out of 40 periods in a weekChat Icon

Re: Teachers - did you get your schedule??

ugh, yeah!

Here's when I have my full class

Monday: 90 minutes
Tuesday: 4 1/2 hours
Wednesday: 3 hours
Thursday: 2 1/2 hours
Friday: 3 1/2 hours

Then I have a partial class for about 3 1/2 hours during the week.

This doesn't count the 1/2 hour they have "morning work" time Since that's when announcements are/when then unpack.

Also doesn't include 1x month guidence lessons, and 2x month Art presentations.

So I have an entire class for 17 1/2 hours a week out of 30 1/2 hours. And 2 1/2 hours of that is Morning Work/announcements.

Oy vey.

The difference for us, though, is we're independent, so we have no tests to teach for. You'll do great, though! If there's one thing us teachers are good at, it's adapting to what we're givenChat Icon

My schedule is pretty good. Though I teach Friday afternoons, which is hellish when you have seventh graders. Chat Icon

Re: Teachers - did you get your schedule??

Won't get my schedule until Tuesday. But I only get a 40 minute prep and a 40 minute lunch...so hopefully none of my preps are in the morning. My little ones can't work 3 hours straight in the afternoons.
