Tax Question
For those of you that completed your adoptions a quick tax question....
Do you know if you are able to defer your tax adoption credit for one year. We are way above the limit to get back the refund this year but next year I won't be working and our income will be just at the cut off level and I really don't want to miss out on the refund if at all possible.
We go to our tax guy next week but I don't think he has done an adoption credit before and I want to be as well informed as possible and I couldn't find anything specific on the irs site.
TIA!

Re: Tax Question
I'm of no help. We've already received ours. We were not above the limit. I'm sure you can though. GL!

Re: Tax Question
Hey Susan!
How are you? How is your little man?
We tried to apply for the tax credit when we did our taxes, but we don't have a ss# yet for Tia. You have one?? Didn't you finalize after us?? I am so frustrated at this point as we had to ask for an extension as we are awaiting her birth certificate. We then have to take the birth certificate to Social Security to apply. Only when we receive her # can we get the credit and that could take months... grrrr
Can you FM me and let me know what your process was??
Thanks!

Re: Tax Question
Hi :) im not susan but if your have their Certificate of Citizenship then you can get a SS#. We don't have a Bcert yet either and they didn't give us a problem. Also, I was told by the IRS that even if we didn't have a SS# we just need to submit the form for a taxpayer ID number and it should all be fine. HTH

Re: Tax Question
I got a taxpayer id number instead of a ss# and applied for the credit the same year he came home. john still doesn't have his ss#, or birth certificate for that matter.

Re: Tax Question
Thanks... for some reason my accountant said he spoke to several different people at the IRS and they said the tax ID number would not be sufficient??
Well, thanks for the info. I'm going to follow up again with my accountant.
