Talk to me about potty training

DS is 2 years old (and 1 month) and lately he's been expressing interest in using the potty. Last night he told me he needed to pee pee in the potty, I took him into the bathroom, he sat down on the toilet and peed AND pooped! I was so proud of him - we didnt coax him into or anything...he told me he needed to go and he just went.

Then this morning he did the same thing "mommy...i need to poop on the potty" and I took him in and he sat down and peed and pooped.

Sounds easy enough, but I'm noticing he's still peeing in his diapers during the day. He's also still in a crib, so I'm not sure how to go about night time training.

What are my next steps that I should be taking now that he has successfully used the toilet twice? Also, should I be having him use one of those little kid potties or keep him on the adult toilets?

You're better than me. Tyler tells me he has to go Pee Pee - and I tell him to go in his diaper

I'm still scarred from training Jack, and not yet ready to deal with another one.

LOL I thought about just telling him to do it in the diaper. I'm not sure that I'M ready to potty train yet!

was Jack difficult to train?

Re: Talk to me about potty training

YOu have to decide if YOU and your son are ready for this. (it takes time and a ot of patience) If you are ready and so is he I would start bringing him to the potty every 1/2 hour to start off with. I let my daughters go without pants or undies for the first couple of days. I gave my girls a choice and still do. They can either use the potty or the small potty. I also have a potty in my car, just incase they have to go when we are on the go.

YOu also have to realize that there are going to be a lot of accidents. Unless your son is like my nephew and decided to be potty trained one day and rarely had any accidents.

AS for night time, I feel my daughters bladders are not ready to hold it that long. I have put them in pull ups at night. They are also in cribs still. They will be moving to a bed in NOv., so I will try no pull-ups then.

This is all coming from a mom of twin girls who are not fully potty trained yet. They still have accidents. So, I really do not know what I am talking about. I just have done what seems to work for us.

I'd let him run around naked for the day and see what he does. Concentrate on daytime first. I really believe you can't train for night until they are physically able to hold it for a long period of time. Both my girls trained for night on their own in that they started waking up dry.

Yay for him being such a big boy!

Re: Talk to me about potty training

I say go for it! You son sounds ready and I say you shouldn't hold him back.

I heard that it's easier to start potty training kids before they turn 2.5 yo'cus that's after they are more stubborn and set in their ways with using diapers.

Get him a bunch of Gerber undies (with extra padding) and even some vinyl undies to go over that if you dont feel secure. I order mine at amazon.com. FM me if you wan to know which to get.

Encourage DS to use the potty by asking him every half an hour or hour. I used a timer for this. The ladies at daycare also do the same thing.

Let him wear pullups during naps and bedtime until he's 100% trained.

Get a child toilet seat for every bathroom and a potty chair (we use the FP frog potty chair which DS loves) for the room DC is usually in 'cus there may be times when he can't hold it in until you get him to the bathroom.

Yes, you will likely have the occasional accidents but it will be worth it when he's fully trained!

Don't go backwards - let him keep going on the regular toilet.

Last year when DS was training, he had to go when we were at a fair. The port-a-potties were SO gross, he wouldn't pee on the grass, so I told him to go in his pull-up and I felt so bad- like it was against everything I was trying to avoid.

If he's not waking up dry or crying when he has to go at night, I'd wait until you have more success during the day.

Re: Talk to me about potty training

Thanks everyone! This was all great advice. I'll be getting the child toilet seats and a small potty for him today and switch him into pull ups at night time and regular underwear during the day.

Wish us luck!

Re: Talk to me about potty training

I would stick with it if he is ready. DD#1 was a horror to train I pushed it and she just wasn't ready - when she was she trained in like 1 day. But it was torture for a very long time.

DD#2 is fully trained. She is 27 months. She told me she wanted to go. For her - she wanted to swim on our cruise and was told you can't in swimmies (the cruise lines don't allow swim diapers on most lines and ships).

Once she expressed interest this summer I left the potty out and put her on the minute she woke up - and then let her take the lead. I believe if they are ready it happens pretty quickly - but if they are not and you want it more - then it can be a lot of work.

For us - DD#1 really needed the pull ups b.c she was having a lot of accidents. But for DD#2 they were a crutch - she would have been trained 2 weeks earlier - if I had thrown them out. They are good to get your child used to being able to go alone (pull pants up and down) but once they start to get the hang get rid of them. DD was totally trained at home - but I used them for a short time over underwear for errands - she had one or two accidents (my mom didn't want her at her house without a pull up until she was 100% trained with no accidents) and it caused some regression. Once I dumped them she had never looked back.

We still use "night" pants bc she isn't ready at night - she is waking up dry 5-6 nights a week but sleep through when she wets at night and doesn't wake up. I figure I will get rid of the night pull ups once she stays dry for 2 weeks.

Good Luck!
