Swine flu question (Update)

My dad is set to offiiciate a family friend's son's wedding in a week. The groom told my dad that he could never imagine anyone else doing it, so this is a big honor for my dad. My parents are close friends with them. Problem is the wedding is in Mexico! My family is now worried, and told dad that he shouldn't go, however this is a wedding, and he doens't want to ruin the friendship(The couple is paying for everything) What should he do?There is such a big risk involved. His faith might also be questioned because he is a man of God. We really are worried about this. I hope I'm not overreacting to the threats of the virus.

Re: Swine flu question

I would get him to tell his doc he is going to Mexico, get a script for Tamiflu JIC and go but be vigilant about washing and what I touched!

Honestly, i wouldn't go.

They're advising people to not travel in and out of Mexico unless absolutely necessary - precisely to avoid further spreading the virus even further.

Yes, the flu here is not bad, and the people in the US so far that have it have recovered just fine. However why would you want to go put yourself in potential harms way? What if when he's down there, the US decides to ban travelers from Mexico from coming back because things get worse? He'd be stuck there.

I don't know.. I can understand his wanting to do it for his faith and friendship with the couple, but IMO it would be putting himself, and then his family at rist for potentially getting the flu.

And I would hope the couple getting married would understand the situation, and even consider changing the venue if possible. I'm sure your father isn't the only one conflicted about what to do

Re: Swine flu question

Even though there is a huge risk involved, I would go if i was your dad. I agree with seeing his physician before he leaves and wear a mask at all times. Tell him no to touch anyone.

Re: Swine flu question

First off...has he checked with the family to make sure they are still going?
If so, then I would go and do as other's have advised. I don't think the risks are nearly as great in the resort areas, the concentration of flu has been in the highly populated Mexico City.

I would go -- the # of cases is leveling off down there. However, I read that Mexico is stopping all nonessential services and closing businesses, so that could affect things. Also, this is an extreme WHAT IF, but I'd have some sort of contigency plan in case the US decides to stop all flights from Mexico to the States and your dad gets stuck there.

Is he in good health? then I would for this special occassion.

1. the us is trying to stay on good terms with mexico through this - closing the border would be bad - mexico depends on US tourists 2. it's hard to close the border - look how many people get in illegally. Plus, you could probably fly to another country from mexico and then get into the US from there 3. he can go to the us consolate

Re: Swine flu question

I would 100% not go. I am actually suprised pple are even considering going. No, you can not stop living your life but WHY even take the chance. I believe in better to be safe then sorry. Mexcio is running rampant with tis virus, it is not worth it imo--even for a wedding.

My initial thought was that doctors may not do this, but then I remembered that I was able to do this when I traveled to China (thinking of bird flu). It's worth doing if he's dead set on going.

Personally, I would not travel to Mexico right now for a wedding. I am actually surprised the couple is still moving forward with wedding plans in Mexico. I'm the first one to say not to panic over this, but I don't think I'd travel to Mexico right now.

Re: Swine flu question

Where in Mexico is the wedding? Some parts of Mexico are not affected at all.

Depending on where you are in Mexico, you may be closer to the swine flu cases right here in NY, than in Mexico.

Re: Swine flu question (Update)

Update:
The couple got a little upset when my dad asked them if they had a plan B just in case. The groom called him last night and said that the wedding was going to happen at all cost...this to me sounds selfish because they are not considering the welfare of their guest. I understand about the dream wedding and everything but I wouldn't be upset if my guest couldn't attend due to an epidemic.
