Spring training trip

DH and I are thinking about going to FL for a few days to take in some spring training Yankee games, lounge around at the pool and/or beach and see some sights.

Anybody do this or can point me in the right direction?

Re: Spring training trip

Where to stay if I want to go to 2 games and then enjoy the sun for a few? Any tips? Fly into Ft. Lauderdale?

For the Yankees, we fly into Tampa.

I love staying near/on Clearwater Beach. Chat Icon

Re: Spring training trip

Fly into Tampa (TPA). The airport is 5 minutes from the field.

I was there 2 weeks ago and we stayed at the Embassy Suites Tampa. Last year we stayed at the DoubleTree Suites Tampa Bay

There are soo many hotels in the area/near airport. Stay away from HoJo Hotel & Days Inn, BTDT and they were awful.

There are two major malls International Plaza & Westshore Plaza with great
restaurants.

Always have a pen/baseball/camera with you at all times. The players are everywhere. You can follow them from the stadium to the restaurants and take pictures of them driving on the streets/at red lights... BTDT too Chat Icon Chat Icon

Clearwater beach is a must! Gorgeous. About 20 min away, depending on traffic. Get there for a sunset!

Go to the game early and watch practice, never know who's signing.

ETA: Donatellos restaurant-great italian food and a guarantee to see a player there!

Re: Spring training trip

Awesome! What about a hotel that is more of a resort? Do you think I could still get tickets to two games at the end of March?

eta: how much am I spending for say 4-5 nights?

Not sure about tickets, I thought it was sold out. I would check out either the yankees website or steinbrenner field's website or as a last resort, ebay.

I found a Hyatt Hotel & Resort near the airport. Are you looking for something like an all inclusive resort? I don't think there are in that area.

Re: Spring training trip

Right now and last minute I would say hotels are pretty expensive. Especially in that area knowing its ST time.

Do you have points on a CC that you could use? Thats what we did (only 1 night though)

Re: Spring training trip

I have points and my BIL has generously offered his miles for the air.

I don't know how many points I need per night though.

Oh thats good, you will def. save alot! I would find a hotel you want and call and see how many points it is? My mom booked it so I dont know how many she used.

I think you should also rent a car. Not everything is walking distance.

Not sure if you are going to find something like that. The hotel this year was beautiful, full hot breakfast incl, heated pool. Last years hotel was nice too, it was on the bay, pool too.
I think check out Clearwater and see if there are any resorty type places.

This year we only went Sun-Mon. Previous years we've gone long weekends (fri-mon/tues).

Re: Spring training trip

Was thinking Thurs March 24 returning March 29. Is that too many days? Will we be bored?

The hotel is expensive but I can get two nights with points.

No I don't think it's too many days. You can find other cities to visit or just relax on the beach all day. Plus it gets you out of the cold weather!
There's a Busch Gardens in the area as well as a zoo. Downtown Tampa, St. Petersburg (nice Pier with restaurants/shops) like South Street. Orlando is only an hour away. We went there for a day one year.

Re: Spring training trip

Now DH doesn't think he can leave those dates.

He thinks maybe next year to do it with the package the Yankees offer.

Has anyone done that through the Yankees?

Re: Spring training trip

We've gone two times already - it's a ton of fun! We like to splurge and rent a convertible when we're down there and stay in a reasonably priced hotel. I forgot the names of the ones we've stayed in but one was on the water in Clearwater. We went on weekends when they were playing teams that are close to Tampa - we went to a Phillies game, a Toronto Blue Jays game - it's fun to see the other stadiums but Legends (now Steinway) Field is by far the best!
