Spotting the 1st tooth, buying the shoes...
Just wondering if anyone elses family does this?? I think it may be an old italian tradition ???

I think that is what my mom said and we are not italian,,
however, my mother kept telling me that the grandm is supposed to buy the first pair of shoes.. I hadn't heard anything lik ethat but I was very happy she bought them.. stride rite shoes are expensive..

We do it too - I spotted Em's first tooth so I bought her a pair of sandals. I think its a cute tradition.

Its true! I sent Noah to stay with my friend for the day and she spotted the beginnings of a tooth...and two weeks before that she went on holiday to Greece and bought Noah back a pair of greek pom pom shoes!
How funny is that!

Both of our families have this tradition. My family is not Italian (DH's is though). We had to let both sets of parents think they found the 1st tooth since they were very into it...but really mommy did...but no one bought the shoes.....but I told my mom to wait for the fall because she relaly wants to buy his 1st pair of construction boots (although she also gave me some $$ towards the purchase of some sneakers I recently made.).

I had never heard of this tradition until my mother found his first tooth and told me she had to buy the first pair of shoes (she's Irish).

I think it's a downstate thing, I'm not sure. I've never heard of it except from my IL's.

Both my family and DH family is Italian- and both families follow this tradition... (except as far as buying "shoes"- they buy the 1st pair of WALKING SHOES($)-
I found Ryans 1st tooth... but I will prob ask my mom if she wants to come with me and help pick out and or buy Ryans 1st pair of shoes....since I know she was hoping to find it!

I have heard of this. My mom said years ago it was the first pair of walking shoes.
I found Hayley's first tooth and I also found my friend's baby's first tooth. I bought them both a pair of sandals.

My mom said the same thing. Genevieve cut her two bottom teeth months ago, and her 1st top one just came in. But we told my mom and m-i-l not to buy her good shoes yet, b/c she is not walking yet, so why waste $$...
