Spinoff to the flight question...

If you have flown with a child under 1, do you purchase a seat or do you have them sit in your lap?

I ask because we are going to Florida in April and DH is convinced that we should get DS a seat. I see no point since he is going to be in my arms anyway. Just curious to know what you all do!

Re: Spinoff to the flight question...

I would just because of what my friend told me about the babies flying all over the cabin in the event of a crash.

You do not need to. We flew with DS at 3 months and 8 months and he fell asleep on us both times.

Re: Spinoff to the flight question...

Well, I flew Southwest w/ DS when he was 4 mos (to my mom's). The prices we DIRT CHEAP so I bought him a seat, and brought along his infant car seat.

We flew again when DS was 5 mos (to my dad's), but we flew Delta. The prices were significantly more, and we chose not to buy a seat. We still used the infant car seat (w/ snap n go) brought it to the gate, and asked at the gate if there were any extra seats. Even if DH and I were not to sit together. On 3 of the 4 flights (we had to change plans) there was an extrea seat, so we were able to bring the car seat on, and DS was in there. The last leg of our trip home, there were supposedly no open seats (Chat Icon no one checked the computer, but we saw a few open seats, whatever), but it was DS bedtime and he slept in my arms the whole flight (Atlanta to JFK).

It is a chance we took (not buying a seat), but we could not afford to buy a seat ($250 per person round trip). We're doing the same thing again in 2 wks when we go to my dad's again.

When DS was 9 months old, we did not purchase a seat for him. Every flight since then we have purchased him a seat. He is just too big now to hold.

Re: Spinoff to the flight question...

We go to FL pretty often-the reality is you don't have to but if DC is a mover like mine he wants nothing to do with sitting on my lap for 2 hrs he does much better in his own seat. That said we have been pretty lucky in that when we have flown the flights have not been full and although we did not purchase a seat we have been able to get one anyway since it was free. From now on however I told DH we should just buy one since it is more miserable to worry about will there be a seat or not and DS will get out of hand if he needs to stay on our laps.
Have a good trip and good luck!

Re: Spinoff to the flight question...

I only flew to florida but we bought DD a seat. Best decision if you ask me! The plane was full both ways and she was so comfy stretched out on her seat sleeping, plus it allowed more room for all her stuff. ETA: we did not bring a car seat.

Even if there isn't a crash. Turbulence occurs on many flights, and there are way too many stories of DC getting hurt during sudden turbulence. Landings can be rough, too. We always bought a seat, since we wanted to be guaranteed that DC would have a seat, and we wouldn't have to worry about where to strap them in. They were (and still are) always strapped into their car seats.

(Plus, if they have their own ticket, you can carry more stuff on the plane. Each ticket gets two checked bags, one carry-on, and one "extra" bag... Chat Icon Chat Icon )

We are leaving for FL on Sunday. I purchased DD a seat. She is 6 months old and weighs 18+ pounds. We are bringing her car seat on the plane.
