Spinoff to Monopoly post -- has anyone noticed that everything is changing...

for this generation of kids? Bugs Bunny...have you seen him lately? Bugs Bunny has been around since around 1940 and has basically been the same looking. Now look at him! Chat Icon

External Image

Does anyone else find this extremely sad that they need to change EVERYTHING for this generation? My stepson cannot ride in the car for 5 minutes without being "bored" without his gameboy. Meanwhile we would take 2 hour in traffic trips to see my aunt in Staten Island and I'd be stuck listening to WFAN while dying in the back seat with nothing but my imagination.

Re: Spinoff to Monopoly post -- has anyone noticed that everything is changing...

Kids these days. I am 26 but my two nephews who are 13 and 16 are absolutely crazy. They have to have every new video game system and every video game to go with that. No matter where we are they need either their nintendo ds or psp with them. About a month ago we got tickets to a ducks game. We took them. I am getting into the car and each one has their ipod. I am like what are you doing with those. We are going to CI not across the country. I had to fight with them to bring them back inside. The radio in my car works. They can listen to what I listen to. It's so annoying.

Chat Icon That looks more like Fugs Bunny. He's scary looking.

And I agree..I remember we drove from NY to CA when I was a kid. 2 adults and 4 kids in a car and we all survived without gameboys, DVD players, Ipods. Like you all we has was our imagination.

Yeah in the last seat of a station wagon facing traffic. Playing games that you made up. Ahhh those were the days.

I can't stand when a children's picture book is turned into a full length movie. I always thought that the Polar Express was a sweet book and then the movie came out. It was too long and had unnecessary dialogue.

I agree, I mean Im only 32 and have noticed so much change and not just in toys and cartoons. Kids (I hate sounding old) today have no clue. If I would have said the things my cousins say to their parents to my mom.... There would have been one less wacko on LIF.
Why change Bugs bunny? Why so he can look like a transformer? I dont get it. If its not broke, dont fix it. I miss my old school Saturday morning cartoons, now its all Robots and Aliens killing each other. What happened to Tweety Bird and the Smurfs?? So Sad. I know how my mom feels when she says how much things have changed since she was younger. Chat Icon

Actaully we were in a Checker (like the old cabs) with my one brother sleeping in the back window for 1/2 the ride. Chat Icon Chat Icon Obviously at time when there were no seatbelt laws.

Stayed in CA for 8 months than came back to NY on a bus. Which was even worse. Since we were in front of strangers we knew better than to act up.

Is that really what Bugs Bunny looks like now?! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

What is happening these days?

I have always said if and when I have children there will be no DVD players or gameboys etc in the car. Kids will play "I Spy With My Little Eye" or see if they can find a license plate from every state when on the road.

I agree no one wants a screaming child in their backseat but I don't agree with shoving electronics in their face to shut them up either.

This is exactly what I mean...I'm only 33 and find myself thinking things like this all the time. I can't believe the things my stepsons say to my DH. I want to smack them in the mouth. Parents have so many rules to try to keep their kids safe, such as not going out on their own until they're 35, and making "playdates" until they're 22. But they aren't teaching kids manners and respect. It's sad...I ask my DH, would you ever talk to your father that way? He said, never. So why do you let your kids talk to you that way? Do you not want them to respect you or their elders at all??

They get everything they want, when they want it. They never want for anything. My stepson, as soon as a new xbox 360 game comes out, he's already got it on reserve and DH is buying it for him. $70 a pop! For nothing! I never got anything for no reason.

They each have a Gameboy DS, a DS lite, and a PSP. They have a GameCube, PS2, Xbox 360 and now for Christmas they want the Wii. Does it ever end? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Funny that you should say that. Both of them yell at their mother and have to be paid to lift a finger. If I ever spoke to my mom like that I would have been smacked. I knew better than to yell at her. It's all about the way they were raised. It sounds like your stepson and my nephews have a lot in common. I just hope they outgrow it and finally realize the worth of a dollar.

No it never ends, because parents would rather buy a kid whatever they want and spoil them rotten so they don't have to be responsible for entertaining them.

There are certain rules my nephews have to abide by at my house that my sister doesn't make them do at hers.

For example they are allowed to eat breakfast in front of the tv. That doesn't float with me. In the morning we should be wishing each other a great day and discuss what we are looking forward to (or not looking forward to as the case may be).

When at my house they are only allowed to watch tv for a max of an hour a day unless it's a movie.

These Xbox's and Playstations and computer games are the exact reason so much of the population is suffering from obesity. These "pieces of technology" are molding our youth to be lazy pieces of cr@p.!

I went over to my sisters house and my one nephew was telling me how he went to the store today and reserved three games. At say 60-70 a piece that is around 200 dollars. He doesn't have a job. Where is he getting this money?

I try to do the same in my house, but when DH isn't re-enforcing what I'm trying to do, and neither is their mother, the point is rather moot.

Well........
That bugs is prett scary looking! Are they making new cartoons with him like that? Did the other Looney tunes characters change as well?

But....
Every generation says .... Kids todayChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
Things change over the years. If everything stayed the same, well, things would get kind of boring, I think. Ask your parents, your grandparents, they all had the same sentiments. You could fill in the blank with something different, but the idea is always the same.
When the Beatles came out adults were dismayed and horrified by their long hair.
Remember the song from Bye-Bye Birdie? Kids Today? Its always the same, no matter what the year or what the current crop of kids has or does.

Kids!
I don't know what's wrong with these kids today!
Kids!
Who can understand anything they say?
Kids!
They a disobedient, disrespectful oafs!
Noisy, crazy, dirty, lazy, loafers!
While we're on the subject:
Kids!
You can talk and talk till your face is blue!
Kids!
But they still just do what they want to do!
Why can't they be like we were,
Perfect in every way?
What's the matter with kids today?
Kids!
I've tried to raise him the best I could
Kids! Kids!
Laughing, singing, dancing, grinning, morons!
And while we're on the subject!
Kids! They are just impossible to control!
Kids! With their awful clothes and their rock an' roll!
Why can't they dance like we did
What's wrong with Sammy Caine?

I was only mentioning it, really, because of the Bugs Bunny thing...and yes, they've all changed and yes, they have a cartoon now...Bugs has been the same since 1940, close to 3 generations...but he's not exciting enough for kids now!

Chat Icon Loonatics? I don't think I'd allow children to watch that just based off the name.

And yes of course things change and thats a fact of life. But I believe parents should take a little bit more of an active roll over what they allow.

I see nothing wrong with allowing an Xbox in the house with all the latest games if it were monitored and used for enjoyment or positive reinforcement. (Do something good for someone, you are allowed to do something for yourself etc) But that isn't how it is used. Instead parents see it as an easy way to keep the kids out of their hair.

Or how about the commercial on Nick at Night about "The family Table" it's sad that a commercial needed to be created to remind parents that they should spend time with their children and what better way to do it then around the dinner table.

Growing up for me (which wasn't too long ago) there was no question about where dinner was (at the table) without tv or any other distractions.

Wait, that's the new looney tunes? When did this happen? Wierd! No, I think it is terrible to change things like this. I remember watching steamboat willie, and all the old disney cartoons as a kid, and I loved them. I think it's so cool if your kids watch a cartoon that you watched as a kid. It's something nice to share with them. Not everything needs to become bigger and better, IMO.

DH and I have already decided that our children will not have game systems. WE will be responsible for teaching them to play outside, and play sports, and use their imagination.
WE will not use the TV as a babysitter.
