Spin-off to the smarter breastfed babies. Formula=status...
Anyone's mom or grandmother ever tell you that they didn't breastfeed because formula feeding was like a status symbol?
I always found it hysterical that when I had Ava and decided to breast feed that my mother and grandmother were horrified because, as they said, "Only peasants breast feed!" 
As if we were in the old country or something.
But apparently, that was the thinking back in the day. Poor people breast fed while people with money formula fed.
So formula mommies, those bottles of formula are like baby bling somewhere in the old country

Rob's mom said the same thing to me! She said that 'poor women and hippies' are the only ones who breastfed 'in her day'.

My grandmother thought the same thing, along with the fact that she always thought that the kids weren't getting enough to eat!
I thought I'd be happy now hat I'm done with formula. My DS gave up BFing himself at 6 months. Had no interest in it anymore. We now have 3 different gallons of milk in the fridge at $4.45 a gallon and it doesn't last as long!! (Whole milk, 2% and Skim)

I heard this too. My mom and her friends said the same thing. Funny thing is that a close friend of mine was breastfed and her parents were TOTALLY hippies

My mom told me the same thing. She encouraged me and my sister to BF, but she didn't BF us. She told us that in the 70's, only women who couldn't afford formula BF.
How things have changed!

I was formula fed so my mom was very interested when I BFd until DS was 6 months.
She told me that at the time my sister and me were born, BFing was NOT encourage at all.

My mom BF me and her doctor used to try and discourage her from doing it. He would always try and get her to switch to formula.
It is so crazy how the times have changed.

Well what is funny to me is that you STILL have to be rich to formula feed, lol!!! At $26/can, who really wouldn't want breastfeeding to work out?? I know I sure did but it didn't so there went an extra $100/month, lol.
I never heard this stated though, however my family has said "it just wasn't really done at the time, no one breastfed".

Actually, it's not the first time I've heard that. My MIL said the same thing. Mind you, I didn't BF, but boy did she and I have it out over this.

my mom tried w/my oldest brother but she admits she gave up too soon and moved onto formula - because she didn't bf him, she didn't want to bf the other 3 brothers or myself b/c she didn't think it would be fair

I don't think it was the formula companies. It was the drs. My mom says with breastfeeding you don't know if the baby is eating enough.
