Special Ed kindergarten and potty training

Hi, I had assumed my child with special needs would need to be placed in a district 75 class for K. However both his teacher and ABA therapist think he can do well in a 12:1:1 in his community school. I am just wondering will he have to be potty trained? Bot sure if that's a reasonable goal. Thanks!

That's tough in a 12:1:1. My son was in a 12:1:1 and had accidents still at that point, and I was called each time, as they were not a allowed to assist him. Will he have his own 1:1 aide? If so, then you would have to ask your district if that aide would be able to change the diapers.

You need to make sure you have it on your IEP. There are certain staff that has the authority to help with potty training so you need to make sure you know what your district's rules are.

For me - DD was not potty trained but was in an 8:1:1 class in her home school. They potty trained her. All the teachers and aides in that class had the credentials that were needed. I had a friend in the 12:1:1 class who needed assistance with the potty and he had to go to the nurse to use the bathroom because his aides were not authorized to help him.

My son is in a 12 class. There is a child in the class with a 1:1 aide who is assisting him with potty training. I'm pretty sure that's one of his goals on his IEP.

My son is in a 15:1 and has a 1:1 aide who is also there to assist with toileting. I was told not to worry about it that arrangements can be made. After 2 weeks of accidents, we got the aide. We did need to go back to committee after the start of school. So my advice would be that if your child is not potty trained by mid summer, so back to committee and have the IEP changed. Easier to drop the aide in the future than add.
