Social Studies can be anything - geography, culture, American nationalism (which is what I think the Kindergarten state curriculum guide suggests), history. Maybe poems from around the world? Or poems about the USA and the flag? Red, White and Blue? A poem about their town (incorporating map skills with a map of their town)? HTH - just some ideas!

community poems - like betsy franco - or even ogden nash?

you can cut the poem into strips and then have them look at a copy of the poem and have them paste it together.

I know for first grade, we are doing map skills for april. so you can have them create maps for let's say the lunchroom or the classroom, then write a poem about that room.

IE:

Lunch is where you go to eat
My mom packs me a very good treat
Brian has an apple, Sarah has grapes
But the lunch lady looks like a big furry ape,
So I don't want to eat in the lunchroom today,
I guess I'll do something naughty to eat with Principal McCrae.

Do you have a poem picked out? I am sure we could come up with ways to connect it to SS!

That is so cute, but are they comign up with that on their own? My 1ast grade had a problem with writg an acrostic poem.

I might try that with the second grade since we just finished a unit on map skills.

Thanks for the idea!

My first graders are on a second grade level and I'll be honest, some of them blow me away with poetry. You can do an alphabet poem based on a location or using map words.

example

Nobody lives far up north
only because it's too cold
really cold if you think about it
that is why I live
here in the United States

I was just finishing up a unit on map skills with my second grade class.

I wanted as a final activity to have the students create a a map of the school either by drawing it or I might take pictures of the important places in the school and they might label it.

I originally wanted to have them walk around with a compass, but they are a bit rowdy for that.

I am a kicking th idea round, but I am a bit stuck as far as what to do.
Do you do anything fun like that? I can even have them write poems like you suggested.

I need a good display to put out in the halls this month.

Thanks for your suggestions.

You can make it an interactive display. They can draw maps and on another piece of paper (with cool borders to color) they can write poems about the place and see if people can guess the place based upon the poem.

That's a good question...it would depend on how your class works. Personally, I would make it an individual thing but that's b/c my class is chatty and would not produce what I want b/c they'd be too busy chatting.Chat Icon
