So this woman has been calling my cell phone for years...
and its soooooooooo freaking annoying...Seriously, at least 2 years...and at all hours!!
The exchange she calls from is the same as my old phone number, so when I glance at the caller ID I usually answer it thinking its someone I know...
Anyway, it happened twice the other day...and I was just fed up...I mean, just pay attention to what you're dialing!!!!
So, I called the number back and said, Listen, I'd appreciate if you would watch what you are dialing...this is my cell phone and it costs me $$ everytime you call me...what number are you trying to call anyway?? And, she just hung up 
Then, yesterday afternoon my cell rings and I answer it w/o looking...And its the womans grandaughter!!!
She apologized profusely for her grandmother calling, that she is very elderly and on medication...and the grandmother was very upset about my call. She and her mom live OOS and the grandmother calls there all day long...and their area code plus exchange and first digit is the same as my exchange and following numbers  (ex- my # is 631-804-1234...their # is 804-123-4111) , and the grandmother gets confused and dials 631 and then their area code and gets me  She offered to pay me for the time she has used on my phone, but of course I said it wasn't necessary...
OY!!! Now I feel terrible!!!!

By no means do I want you to feel more terrible, but it's a lesson learned to all of us out there - keep in mind of who the other person is on the "other" side - you just never know...
It's was nice of the grandaughter to call and apologize though!

Actually, you did the perfect thing. If you hadn't called back and left that message, she would still be calling you and you wouldn't know why.
Now at least you know what's up.

awwww!!!
...my mom has been getting calls asking for gloria hernandez for like a YEAR now - and the people don't really speak english so it is hard to explain that gloria no longer has this number! LOL!

ahhhh, she did say, unfortunately I am not there to program her phone...
so, hopefully next time they visit they will take care of that...
But, I haven't received a call since, so maybe she is more aware now!!

Don't sweat it sweetie. At least the family was nice enough to call you and tell you the 411...I feel bad, she's old but still, you shouldn't have to be inconvenienced. You should have gotten her 1st name so the next time she calls, you can say "Hi Ethel, etc."

ETA - are you assuming every old lady's name is Ethel? Or that Ethel is an old name? What if I wanted to name my next kid Ethel????
