So sad..... need some advice on supplementing with formula...

So since the arival of AF a few weeks ago, I can't seem to get my supply back up...

Right now, Im about 10-12oz short each day. Luckily I had a huge freezer supply, and I should make it another few weeks with the frozen milk to make up the difference.

DS is almost 9 months old, and Im so proud to say has never had anything but mommy's milk!!!!
However.... Im pretty sure those extra oz's are not coming back and I will need to begin supplementing with formula...

Is there any kind of formula that is the most similar to BM?

How should I give those extra 10oz??? A little in each bottle? 1 bottle of formula... and the rest BM????

The only nursing session we have at this point is right before bed to "top" him off (and of course if he wakes in the middle of the night)

Generally... DS has 4-7oz bottles of BM/day and then 2oz of BM with his cereal..

I was thinking 3-7oz bottles of BM- 1 7oz bottle of formula and then 2oz of formula with his cereal...????

Any advice or suggestions???

TIA

I didn't BF, but do you think you could go to whole milk? I mean, do you really want to do form for like 2-3 months? Is it worth it?Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: So sad..... need some advice on supplementing with formula...

If I could make it to like 10-10.5 months- I would def. just mix with a little whole milk...

I started weaning DS#1 from formula to whole Milk @ 10.5 months... he was completly on whole milk by 11.5 months old...

BUT- my frozen stuff is prob only going to carry me another 3 weeks...
Which would place us at like 9.5; MAYBE ALMOST 10 months...

I think thats a little early...no?

He eats cheese and yogurt- so I dont think he will have any problem with dairy.

I'd check with your ped, but I'm pretty sure I've read of another BF mommy on here who switched for similar reasons at 9-9.5 months...

If it's for such a short amount of time, would you consider using a mother's milk bank? I know the concept is a bit awkward, but that would be the next best thing to your milk.

Re: So sad..... need some advice on supplementing with formula...

my DS is only 4 months and i wish i could say he will only have BM till 9 months but I am always short a bottle during the day and have been using my frozen supply which is getting down to nothing. I dont seem to pump enough and I am having a really hard time finding time to do it more often then I am.

My Dr said I can supplement with Nutramagin by Enfamil (my DS is fussy and sensitive belly and has reflux) or I can supplement with Enfamil premium.

How bad is it to supplement? My dr says as long as he is still getting BM then its still a good thing but not to get to upset about it but I am not sure if he is saying that bc i was so sad about giving him formula.

Just wanted to let you know that my supply always dipped a few days before AF and then a few days in went back to normal. I'm not sure if it'll happen for you, but you could regain your supply Chat Icon

I got AF back 6 months PP with Ryan but was able to go til 14 months with him. I did introduce whole milk (mixed with BM) around 11 months b/c I was PG and my supply was nosediving.

No... Im not comfortable with that.

If my child was a preemie and/or had a medical condition where BM was a NECESSITY for them- I would do it.

BUT- he has been EBM for 9 months, and will continue to receive mostly BM until he is at least 1 yr. (And I happen to think thats pretty darn great!) :)

My older child was formula fed from 6 weeks on, and did just fine!!! As I know DS#2 will do that same in recieving 10oz of formula each day.

I hope to God something miraculous happens and my supply boosts back up.... BUT I have been low like this for the past month, and I dont see it going back up anytime soon.

I tried adding extra nursing/pumping sessions but with 2 very mobile and active boys and working FT- I cant find the time to pump/nurse more than I already do...

I dont think its "bad" to supplement at all... Some babies never recieve breastmilk and thrive!!!!

Personally, I was hoping to not have to give formula at all...but my body clearly has different plans for me!!!

Some BM is always better then none at allChat Icon

Re: So sad..... need some advice on supplementing with formula...

Once I got AF, my supply was never the same. It was horrible the week that I had it and then went back up slightly. I used to nurse and pump like crazy at that point. I never supplemented, but I was able to EBF DS until he was 15 months (just fully weaned last month). Are you able to do an extra session on the weekends?

No matter what, CONGRATULATIONS on BF this long! I remember reading your struggles and commend you! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Well don't let it get you down - you did an amazing job getting this far Chat Icon Chat Icon

Have you tried fenugreek or anything like that? For some reason, I was only getting like 4oz if I was lucky in the morning with Colin a few wks ago (he still nurses literally 4 times a night so I don't get to pump that much in the morning). Anyway, I tried the fenugreek (3 pills 3x/day) and now I've been getting about 7oz a day for my stash (I go back to work next week so I've been pumping once a day from 6wks). And, he's still eating 4x / night Chat Icon

Re: So sad..... need some advice on supplementing with formula...

My supply totally tanked by 9-10 months. It never recovered, but I was able to add in extra pumping sessions including waking up early to pump and get a little boost by taking More Milk Plus. Those were the only ways I made it to a year.

How often are you pumping on the weekend? Are you taking anything like Mother's Milk Tea or More Milk Plus? I can't help with the formula questions, but I'd start using water with the cereal so you can save those extra 2 oz for a bottle.

Re: So sad..... need some advice on supplementing with formula...

You can add 5 minutes to each pumping session..that often helps tell your body "I need a bit more". You can add a full pumping session- same as above.
Eat oatmeal every single day.
Feenugeek- helped me a ton
Drink Water!!!

Re: So sad..... need some advice on supplementing with formula...

can you pump more to help up your supply..I got my AF every month from 6 months on..and breastfed until a year with both! You just have to work a little harder each month to keep up with supply...

first of all how many bottles and how many oz are you giving...I never gave more than 5 oz for both my DCs for the entire first year!

second...I swear by fenugreek...I tooks 3 pills - 3x a day and that helped with my supply...as well as A LOT OF WATER!!!!!!!!!! at least 10 glasses a day!

some people swear oatmeal too..never tried bec I am not a fan!

I would also pump after ever feeding to trick my body into making more (esp during my AFs) and it might only be a 1/2 oz but it was all extra...same with night time..I pumped around 11 pm rt before my bed time and 2+hrs after DCs last feed for the night! I also tried to feed my DC in the morning off of one breast and pumped the other..so that too was all extra!

Hopefully I have helped! Good luck! IF you are sad about formula..just know it is poss to stick through the annoying drops from the annoying AFs! lol

Re: So sad..... need some advice on supplementing with formula...

When I got AF back, dd was 7 months old and and everytime I would AF my supply decreased. I didn't pump I just knew and DD would want to nurse a lot more durning that week. Then it went back up. I BF until 11 and then she went right to soy milk.

DS was on formula, but I started to mix his formula with regular milk at 10 months and by 11 he was on whole milk.

Does he eat regular food or baby food yet? If not then I would add a lunch meal and then give him 4oz to wash it down with.

Re: So sad..... need some advice on supplementing with formula...

This was exactly me. I agonized over it for soooo long and finally had to give DD formula at just after her 9 month bday. I use Similac Advance. I mixed it with BM to start, but within a week she was fully on formula. I still BF'd in the AM & PM and still do. After about 2 weeks, I got used to it. I know exaclty how you feel. You feel like you failed and that you are being forced to give your child poison. But it's not poison, it is perfectly healthy and you are not a failure - you have done an amazing thing for your child. And before you know it, DC will be drinking milk anyway. DD is 11 months old now and is fully on milk, but still BFing in the AM & PM.

Re: So sad..... need some advice on supplementing with formula...

Thanks everyone!!!

The only time I nurse is before bed....otherwise he is given EBM in a bottle...

He gets 4- 7-8oz bottles/day (and he finishes them to the last drop, I couldnt give less than that, he would most def. be looking for more food!) 3 of those bottles are given at daycare; 1 my DH gives while Im cooking/cleaning up... and then I nurse him "top him off" right before he goes to bed.

I pump 4 times/day... Im already up at 4:30am for my first pumping session... there is no way I could wake up any earlier...

Im at work about 10hrs/ day and struggle to get in 2 "sessions" while there....

Id love to squeeze in another session... I just have to figure out where....????

I have taken fenugreek, but not consistently..... Im going to do the 3pills 3x/day.... How long until I should see some results????

More milk plus and the tea, are just horrid tasting to me...so thats out...

Im not sure Ill ever be able to put out 32oz/day.....:(

Im not sad that my child will be given formula...I dont see it as poision; especially since DS#1 was formula fed from 6weeks- 11 months. I just feel like I worked soooo hard, and am so close to the finish line and now Ill have to be "pushed" to the end of the race

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My child eats SOOOOO much, baby food as well as table food- and yet his milk intake remains the same...

ETA- I am on the same "schedule" on the weekends- DS is a very distracted nurser and a biter...
