my insurance only covered $6 of it. It ended up costing $50 bucks Chat Icon

Mine only cost $10.00 with my insurance for 30 vitamins. I fill mine every month like BCP.

OTC only has 800 mg or something like that of Folic acid. Prescription has more.. I think im off on numbers though.. my pharmacist helped me out on this one. I had prima care then i just switched to generic Prenatals.. they were 26.00 and no side effects so far!

ETA : 3 month supply

That is crazy, go with the OTC ones. I get them from Walgreens and I pay 10 bucks for 100 days supply. My doctor said that was perfectly fine. I would not pay that much if I did not have to...JMHO

I got the generic to Novanatals 90 day supply. They have 1000mcg of folic acid which is what I was taking before as a supplement to my regular vitamins before prenatals. The 90 day supply of generics cost me $35 BUT I dont have to buy folic acid or any other supplement. For 3 months worth, I can afford it.

I thought you only need 800mg of folic acid? That's what's in my prenatals... do I need to take more?

Honestly, every doctor tells every patient different things. I have heard women being told to take as little as 400mcg of folic acid to as much as 1000mcg.

My doc told me 1000mcg. It could be because of my age. It could be because of my health. It could be because a dog bit me when I was seven. It could possibly or probably be that because I am a gastric bypass patient (4 years out) and I do not absorb nutrients the way others do, that I am prescribed this particular vitamin with this particular amount of folic acid. I simply require more. I trust him. He knows me best. I do not use the advice of non-medical professionals.

Sorry to re-hijack but I feel strongly about people listening to their doctors. Most will tell you not to put too much trust in what you read on the net.

My Ob/Gyn told me a good multi vitamin and a folic supplement is fine.

My prescription ones were pricey ($75 for three months was my co-pay). But I figure that my doctor wanted me on them for a reason. My brand in particular does not bother my stomach, which makes it worth the money.

I also figure, I have already saved a lot of money not ordering alcoholic drinks in restaurants, so spending a lot on vitamins is no big deal! Chat Icon

just spend 10 minutes in the store reading the labels...usually they contain the exact same things...the reason a dr. will give you a prescription is so you don't buy a standard multi-vitamin b/c you need more iron and calcium...but some WOMEN'S formulas have the same and the OTC prenatals usually do.

My doctor never prescribed prenatals for me. He said the OTC ones were just as good.
