slow growing grandson

my little grandson is 22months only 20lbs
and 30 inches. He was born at 34 weeks
and hasn't really done much catching up
he was 4.9ozs. Such a dear little soul,
happy, energetic and been walking for
months, trys to talk a little.
Had so many tests, not my son refused
to have him pulled around anymore.
Anyone know of other babies who seem
to fail to thrive, and can they be helped.

Re: slow growing grandson

I know when i worked in a pediatric office we did have 2 kids that were diagnosised with that. It can be scary. But usually with those kids they weren't gaining any weight at all. Maybe he hasn't hit his growth spurt. My daughter is 15 months and towers over all her little friends that are older than her. Both my husband and I are average height (he is 5'9 and I am 5'5). The doctor told us she will slow down. So I would think that maybe he just hasn't had his growth spurt yet.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Re: slow growing grandson

Has he been to an Endocronologist and had his thyroid tested? Tell your son that, although, it is hard to watch this happen, not to stop the testing. The earlier you find out what the problem is, the better the chances of giving this precious child every bit help he can get. I went through this with my youngest daughter, and, although she was tested for different problems that she had, we never found the root cause until she was 11. That was the age she stopped growing. If we had found out sooner, she would have had many more years of the help she needed. Keep at it and don't give up hope. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: slow growing grandson

I know its tough, but stay positive. He may just shot up later in life. My sister was born early and was partically deaf and had speech problems and was at a time labeled special ed. Well, she's now 24 years, graduated from college, filled out in a scene and is almost engaged. Its too soon to look at the negatives. Just enjoy your grandson for what he is!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: slow growing grandson

I was born at 34 weeks and weighed 4 lbs 11 oz. and was 17". I didn't hit 20 lbs until I was 3 years old ... I only reached 5'0" (but my mother is short, 4'10") ... but my weight ... well let's just say I did just fine in that department. Chat Icon
At 2 years old they can usually "estimate" what height your grandson will be as he grows older ...

Re: slow growing grandson

Thanks for all your thoughts. I think
that he should have had one on one
attention when he was first born, and
not placed in day care with other kids
and exposed to their "germs". He
needed extra time to coax him to eat
etc. My middle son, not that small,
was a picky eater, had to stand on my
head to get that extra mouthful into
him, only a "Mother" would do that.
Well. here's hoping.....

Has he been evaluated for Early Intervention Services ? Does he get any PT, OT or speech at all ? Has he been to a developmental pediatrician or just a regular one ? Kids that aren't placed in daycares are more likely to be sicker when they enter elementary school because they have never been exposed to the germs. IMO I would rather my child get sick while in daycare then in elementary school. My daughter is 7 1/2 and only weighs 43 pounds. She is in the 7th percentile for her age group. And compaired to her height/weight ratio she is about the 30th percentile. Is she "failing to thrive" no. Is she tiny for her age, yes.

I have kids at work that are ages 3-5 that some of my 3 year olds are bigger then my 5 year olds ! !

Re: slow growing grandson

I agree. not all people are the same, so
why all children expected to fall into
size for age etc. As long as they are
OK that is the main thing. Some people
are "late bloomers"...... one of my sons
was short at 15, when he hit 16 he
grew 10 inches in 2 yrs, is now 6ft....
one of my brothers the same thing.

Um, okay. But back to your grandson . . .

Has he been evaluated for Early Intervention Services ? Does he get any PT, OT or speech at all ? Has he been to a developmental pediatrician or just a regular one ?

Re: slow growing grandson

I would like him to see a periatric Dr.
who interns in children's growth. I have
been told childrens Schneiders Hos. is
excellent, and they are affiliated with
LIJ, I really am not in a position to make
may suggestions, M.in.Laws are not too
popular I believe. so in a way my hands
are tied. I am hoping that my D.in Law
will listen to her father....
