What about something that goes around your kids wrist? Its still like a rope that you can hold and your child can wander but in a safe distance. Would the people who are opposed to having your child in a harness use something around their wrist?

Nope. I still think of those as leashes.

I don't have kids of my own... but I have a 16 month old niece, who runs everywhere, and throws a fit if we don't let her walk when she wants to.

My brother is going to buy some kind of harness... and after spending a day with my little niece, I can see why he wants to... it's a scary world out there, and between traffic and just sick people who would take a wandering baby, I'd prefer her to be attached to him.

Well one is worn like a harness around their chest with the strap part sticking out of their back. The wrist one is like holding their hand but they do have some freedom.

i think my dog wearing a harness as opposed to a collar leash...is no different, except that for my dog the harness provides even better protection to my dog...

i see this the same as what they do for children...In each case it is different why you would use on over the other. So no it doens't look any better to have a wrist cord as opposed to a harness

Honestly, we used to have one that we put on my brothers wrist and then connected to either my mother or myself. My brother was a wandering kid. You could hold his hand constantly but the moment you let go for ANY reason at all..he was gone. It wasnt that he wasnt taught that it wasnt right to walk away, it was just his personality. My mom, being a single parent basically, had to do everything on her own. From food shopping to going into the city by train with a child for her part time job. This was a god send for her. Sometimes she literally did not have a free hand. I know that most times when she was taking packages out of the car she would "attach" him, of course while he was on the sidewalk and take the packages out. She didnt use it all the time obviously but in situations where she needed to, she did. All situations are different.

I wouldn't do the wrist thing either...but, I am more open to this idea than the harness.

Re: Slight spinoff on kid "leashes" (or harnesses as they are called)

I think if I were going to use one at all, I would stick with the harness, because it actually seems safer to me. I would be afraid of the wrist part pulling too hard or yanking on a child's arm. I would think the force on a harness would be more evenly distributed and less likely to injure a child.

I don't plan on using them if I have children, but have been around children I thought could benefit from these things. Parents can be very attentive and raise their children well, but if a child is strong willed and physically strong, they can get away from a parent really quickly.

If I was in a place like Disney, and I had a child that was a wanderer, I would definitely use it vs. chancing the baby getting lost in the crowd. We found a baby boy when we were in Disney that lost his parents and it was very scary all around. The fear in those poor parents faces was something I never want to deal with.
