Sleeping longer during day than night

DD will be 5 weeks old tomorrow and has recently started taking pretty long naps during the day. Right now she has been sleeping for 3+ hours - which is great for getting stuff done and napping (I took a 2 hr nap before!!), but not so great since she doesn't sleep these long stretches at night. She sometimes sleeps 3 hrs at night, but more consistently does 2.

Is this a problem? If so, what can I do about it?? Thanks! Chat Icon

You can try to keep DD up for longer stretches during the day. For the night wakenings, don't encourage them by stimulating DD. Don't put on lights and do any entertaining. You want DD to start to get the message that dark time is time for sleep. Also keep in mind that 5 weeks is a little early to shape behavior so you will probably have to hang in there a while longer. Get your naps when you can!!!

This is great advice! Hang in there, she will HOPEFULLY be sleeping longer stretches at night! Chat Icon

i agree with this. I really made an effort to distinguish b/t day and night at an early age with DS and it has paid off.

Thanks! I definitely make sure DD is not stimulated at all at night - lights are kept low and all she does is eat and then go back to sleep. So it's not like she thinks nighttime is time to play or anything - she just doesn't sleep very long between feedings! I guess I'll just have to wait this one out. Chat Icon

Re: Sleeping longer during day than night

We did the day/night thing from day 1 and now DS goes right to bed around 7-7:30 and wakes up at 6ish with maybe 1 waking for food. He never puts up a fight to go to bed at night...

The daytime is another issue Chat Icon

Re: Sleeping longer during day than night

I make it a point to have Lily eat every 3 hours during the day. I also keep her up for at least an hour at each feeding. She was having a hard time with days and nights at the beginning also.
Although it's nice to have time during the day to get stuff done while she naps....I found it nicer to sleep for a good stretch at night!Chat Icon

My DD did the same thing at that age. We did the same things- did not stimulate at night. We also limited naps during the day to no more than 3 hours. Our pediatrician said that she had day-night reversal, and that the circadian rhythm starts to kick in at about 5-6 weeks. So hang in there!
