sleep walking

My 7 year old , has been, for the last year waking up about an hour or so after he falls asleep , upset. But not really waking up. He gets out of bed walks around mumbling all over the house... One time he walked into his brotehrs room, actually climbed up on the toy box and just started scratching the wall.. another time, he went into the kitchen pulled his pants downa nd almost peed in the garbage can... lucky I was there.. when ever he gets up like this I follow him but I'm not sure if I should try and wake him up or not. I heard that it is bad to do that if they are sleep walking.... I don;t know what to do... Any help would be great
