Sippy cup/ bottle question

Let me start by saying that DS is 9 months old & almost never holds his own bottle. He can but just wont. On top of that he hates the sippy cup, which I also hold for him. He just dumps it out or throws it on the floor. So my question is... What do I do? I know that ideally they should transition off the bottle at a year. At this rate I'll be holding his cup for him until he is 15. Chat Icon Any suggestions? Is this normal?

Re: Sippy cup/ bottle question

Paige is 7 months and i have to still feed her like i did when she was 1 week.

I like to do it though. She can hold it but she plays with it when she holds it. So i dont have advice. I would love to know what to do also, although like i said i dont mind doing it.

I don't mind it either to tell you the truth. Which is most likely why it is still happening. But some lady in JC Penneys actually stopped me & asked how old my son was & then told me he should be holding his own bottle already!!! That was all she said. And I said... Ummm, he usually does but he is just tired... LIE LIE LIE So now I am feeling the pressure.

People like that make me so Chat Icon Don't listen to them!

That saidChat Icon , I had 2 lazy bones on my hands and one day I just didn't hold them for them - I used these bottle props as a transition. They started holding onto the pillow and then I took that away a week or 2 later. They started to hold their own bottle at that point. I eased them into it and it worked - do what's easiest for you. Re: Sippy cup/ bottle question

I had started trying the sippy cup with DD at 8 months per the docs recommendation. DD hated the sippy cup..she couldn't be bothered. I tried again at 10 months and she took it no problem. I think she just wasn't ready 2 months ago. Pretty much the same thing with holding the bottle. One day she just surprised me and started holding it.

It's hard but try to be patient. It's all about readiness...maybe DC just isn't there yet. Chat Icon

Maybe if you try one that has a straw? Steven doesn't mind any of his sippys but this one is his favorite.

Re: Sippy cup/ bottle question

I was so worried about DD and the cup. I think I tried them all. I started giving her a cup with water a few times a day starting at 6 months and she still didn't have the skill or interest to drink out of them by 11 months. I just kept at it. I started replacing her bottles with cups at 12 months. She did okay at meals (still didn't drink much) but refused the cup at her before bed bottle time. It took another month before I decided to give her the cup without holding her and the bottle/cup. Amazingly, it worked the first night and she has been bottle free ever since. I think she just expected the bottle and me to hold it for her while I was holding her in the glider. I think it was harder for me to give up that last bottle. I still put a pillow on the floor and lay down beside her and sing to her while she drinks it - I think we both enjoy it. Good luck and try not to worry too much about it.

All kids are different and start doing things at different ages. I wouldn't worry about it since your DC is only 9 months. I would reintroduce the cup periodically and not force it, one day it will happen!
