Silly questions about hospital stay

Hi. I am new here and due to give birth really soon. Yikes!

Anyway, my silly question is what is maternity underwear and do I need them? I still wear my pre-pregnancy underwear and they are totally comfortable. They sit just below the belly and cover everything, with room for pads etc. Is there a reason I should go out and buy others for the hospital?

Also, people have suggested bringing pillows to the hospital. I'd be kinda grossed out to bring it home afterwards. Do you really need the extra pillows?

Last question ... I've been given mixed messages as to the post-pregnancy eating rules. Mostly, I've heard cold cuts and soft cheeses are okay but sushi and raw fish are still a no-no. Anyone have other info?

Thanks and sorry so long!

Re: Silly questions about hospital stay

Welcome & Congrats!

I brought my regular underwear to the hospital. I never bought maternity underwear. Mine were very comfy, but be prepared to bring pairs that you dont care if they get ruined. My first 2 days i bled through 5 pairs of them. I did buy an inexpensive pack of Hanes briefs though to bring with me incase i would need a c-section, i didnt want my low panties to lay on the stitches but I went naturally so i didnt need them. Thank God I didnt spend a fortune on Maternity ones they would have went to waste.

ETA: I didnt bring pillows with me either.

Re: Silly questions about hospital stay

I bought cheap granny underwear so when I bleed through them, I can just toss them. I'm having a c-section so I need them to come up high over the incision, rather than bikinis.

I am bringing my own pillow- it was recommended by many of the girls on here. I'll leave it in the car & have DH get it if I need it.

ETA: I haven't heard anything about not eating sushi (raw) after you give birth. In fact, I'm having DH bring some to me during my hospital stay! I'm trying to stay away from Ahi tuna, as it has the most mercury. Yellowtail should be fine though, but in limited amounts. Anything else, raw salmon or snapper should be fine. Always check with your doctor though. I'm assuming you're asking due to BF, right? If you FF, then it doesn't matter at all.

Re: Silly questions about hospital stay

I wore granny panties because I had a c-section. I definetly needed my own pillow. I was miserable the first night. The pillow they gave me was flat and I could not get comfortable. The next night I slept much better with one of my own pillows.

Re: Silly questions about hospital stay

I plan on buying cotton panties, not maternity ones, for my hospital stay. I will also be bringing my own pillow because I have a lumbar and feel like I need it to sleep comfortably.

That's why I was asking ... originally I planned on having DH bring me a bagel and lox (I've been craving that even more than sushi) but then I went to a newborn class and they said avoid sushi. Thought the BFing rules were much more lax ... just no alcohol and limited caffeine but now I'm confused.

Isn't lox smoked? I think that you would be fine to eat that now.
