should i ask her?

Ok, not sure what to do.. (and please don't move this to fashion/beauty..its not a fashion question)

I've recently gained some weight and am having trouble finding cute clothes to fit me properly. I'm around a size 14-16 now. Not quite plus size, but have trouble finding cute things (boobs got bigger, waist disappearing, arms got bigger etc.)

There is a girl i always see at work who i think is about the same size as me (tall and 'larger') and she always has the nicest clothes. I really want to ask her where she shops, but i'm nervous to do it because i'd essentially be saying 'hey, i notice you're a bigger girl too, can you help me?'

Would you be offended if someone asked you that? I just don't know how to approach it to get the answers i'm looking for, but not offend her.

thanks!

Re: should i ask her?

as a "bigger" girl myself -- i would not find anything wrong with someone asking me where i buy my clothes.

just approach her and say "I swear whenever you come in, you always have the nicest outfits on! I have such a hard time finding the right fit for me, could you tell me where you find clothes that flatter you so nicely!"

Simple and not rude at all!

ETA: have you been checking out Lane Bryant? the cuts of clothing at size 14/16 are definitely much more flattering there, than in regular stores.

i have found good stuff at Tommy Hilfiger and Gap -- especially pants, that fit nicely too, for my plus size frame

I dont' think you have to mention that you've gain weight and need bigger clothes and love hers.. Just simply say I love your clothes..you have great style I was wondering where you shop.

Good luck!!

I dunno... I think I would be a little offended if someone said that to me.

How about one day: "Oh great shirt, where did you get it?" Day two: "Nice pants" Day three: "You always have the best clothes, where do you shop?"

I would just say: " you are always so nicely dressed! Where do you find all these great clothes?!!" That isn't insulting in anyway IMO, It's flattering.

Re: should i ask her?

I wonder if she'll think i'm stalking her if i ask her about her clothes every day Chat Icon

thanks for the responses... i do find clothes to fit me in many stores that you guys listed..i'm just looking for stuff a bit more stylish and cute and those are the things i have problems finding.
i.e - i like a lot of clothes at Anthropologie, and a lot of those fit, but they're too expensive. Some of the cheaper stores tend to have the smaller fitting clothing so i get frustrated..

i'll have to see if i can screw up the courage to approach her. i'm usually not shy, but when it comes to talking to girls about fashion i am since i'm not comfortable with how i look anymore.

i see no problem with it at all Chat Icon

I was offended ONCE by someone that was a size 20 asking me if she could borrow the size 12 dress I had on- she said, "We have the same body..."

I never been offended by someone asking where I shop!

Re: should i ask her?

I have only been offended once... when my older boss asked where I got a shirt I was wearing... I couldn't remember but said maybe Kohl's. So she says, I saw some like that in Coldwater Creek... which to me is an "old lady" store! Chat Icon

At my new job almost every day someone asks someone else where they got a certain piece of clothing Chat Icon

Re: should i ask her?

As long as you don't refer to her size and merely say 'your outfits always look so nice... where do you shop?' I can't imagine her being offended...

I have a rather odd figure... I get most of my stuff at ann taylor, target (but it's hit or miss there), and banana republic (mainly tops).

I don't think it's offensive at all! It is not like your saying something rude, you both wear the same size, she has nice stuff, you want to go buy some!Chat Icon

Re: should i ask her?

I'm a size 4-6, but have bigger legs and wide hips (thanks, Cailen!) and was wearing a pair of pants that a woman complimented me on. She was not that big - maybe a size bigger than me, and said how she liked my pants. Then she explained why they would look good on her, because they were straight and would flatter her hips.

I was like Chat Icon thanks

But a simple compliment and "where did you get them" would have gone just fine without me feeling like I was just being called a wide hipped fatass! Chat Icon

But I used to be a size 12, and I dressed very nicely. If a woman was a 12-14, and curvy like I was asked me where my clothes were from, it made me feel proud that I could inspire a woman to love her curves and find cute things for herself!!! Chat Icon
