Separating the MMR shots Q

A few people had posted that they read that this wasn't a good thing. I did some searches today and really haven't found anything that said as such.

To those who have read up on it and read that it wasn't adviseable, WHY do some advise not to?

Just because this is the way the shot has been always given? Was that the only reason?Chat Icon

Re: Separating the MMR shots Q

No-in the split version they sometime still use Thermisol (mecury based preservative) which is not general used in vaccines anymore (except in these split shots and some flu shots).

I'm not sure this is always the case. Most people split the vaccine b/c of the thimerisol in the vaccine to begin with. I believe they have split vaccines without it.

Re: Separating the MMR shots Q

I looked into it a bot and found the split doses may contain thermisol.. and not be as effective.

I need to look more into it,

Re: Separating the MMR shots Q

I was speaking with one of the pediatricians at the practice my son goes to about this the other day. He was saying that he use to to split the shots. When he did this he would have to send the parent to the pharmacy with a prescription for the 3 shots. The parent would then have ot take the shots home and keep them in a certain temperature until they brought them into the doctors office to be given to their child. He said the doctors in his practice convinced him to stop doing this because what if the parent did not keep the shot under the right temperature. A shot not kept in the right temperature could hurt the child. So now there is not splitting at my Ped office.
I am not sure about the Thermisol. I really thought that many drug companies had stopped producing shots with this, but who knows. It is just all so scary and confusing.

My ped does allow parents to delay the shot, though he said if it is not given by 2 years old they ask you to go to another ped.

Thimerisol was removed from the MMR shot back I think starting in 1999 (or they started to remove it back then) It is no longer in the grouped shot. Not sure if there is any in the split up shot - but I have seen people mention that there was here.

There is no thimerasol in the MMR and hasn't been for almost a decade. In the split version there are trace amounts, or there was up until recently.

The MMR has live virus in it and that live virus has been said to cause symptoms of autism. Not the mercury in it (since there is none). I'm all with taking a stand on things, but if you have no idea what you are taking a stand against, I often Chat Icon

Re: Separating the MMR shots Q

My doc stocks the split shots (he's in NJ)- he leaves it up to you what you want to do. I opted w/ the regular non-split shot b/c I didn't want to have to keep taking DD back to the ped since just going there is traumatizing to her.

If you (not necessarily you) say you are splitting up the MMR because of mercury and autism, then you are taking a stand against something you are really misinformed about. That's what I meant.

Re: Separating the MMR shots Q

i guess i don't know how you can make such a statement or even why you would. Maybe i am misunderstanding the statement somehow

I am WELL informed about all the issues about the MMR and autism.

What i think a lot of people seem to not really know too much about our options as parents as to how to proceed after KNOWING about this issue.

Hence this post. To educate. Chat Icon

I was responding to the post where someone commented about the reason to split up the MMR is because it has mercury (and it doesn't). Sorry you misunderstood.
