Senate has no idea what they're voting on for health care bill

A vote on legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act is supposed to take place within the next day, and several senators still have concerns about the process.

Senate leaders have said they view a “skinny” repeal of Obamacare mainly as a placeholder. Once the Senate passes legislation, they say, they can meet with House leaders in a conference committee to work out a real compromise that both chambers can pass.

But now several senators fear the House could skip the conference committee and simply vote on the bill put forward by the Senate.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said he’s “very worried about it.” Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) acted shocked over the idea.

“Say WHAT?! Come again?!” Johnson said, according to TPM reporter Alice Ollstein.

Yahoo’s Liz Goodwin? reports Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) had asked for a guarantee from the House that the skinny bill wouldn’t be passed without a conference, while Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said he’d vote for the skinny bill only so it could advance to conference committee with the House.

A conference committee merely postpones the reckoning between the GOP rhetoric about improving coverage and GOP plans that would take away coverage.

There are several Senators who are actually thinking of voting yes on this "skinny repeal" in the hopes that the House won't pass it... Chat Icon Chat Icon

And the GOP was up in arms because the ACA was "shoved down our throats"... after 18+ months of open debate, well over 100 amendments, several public caucuses, etc, etc... and now, it's just AOK to throw something together during lunch and force 51 Senators to vote for it, even if they don't like it, didn't have a chance to read it, and don't care how much damage it will do to actual people.... I honestly do not understand this process. I watched McCain, Graham, Cassidy and I forget the last one talk about how they don't want skinny repeal but will vote for it if the House assures them they'll go to conference to make changes. So why the hell can't they just figure out what these awesome changes are before they put it to a vote?! They're insisting on voting now for something they admit is terrible but we're supposed to believe a few amendments in conference will fix it? If they had anything close to a solution why haven't we seen it? It's all BS.

Re: Senate has no idea what they're voting on for health care bill

Instead of coming up with an actual health care plan, with input from many groups (Dems and Reps, medical associations, hospital associations, etc), discussed out in the open over a reasonable amount of time, they are ramming this "skinny repeal" though.

Many Senators supposedly don't like it, but are voting yes "hoping" that McConnell will keep his word and bring it to a committee to fix all of the horrible parts of it.... Chat Icon

As soon as Mitch gets enough Senate votes, he's going to push it through as fast as possible, without going to any committee.

The bill removes all of the mandates, which anyone even remotely knowledgeable about finances and insurance knows will automatically create a "death spiral". Healthy people won't buy insurance, so only the sicker people who are spending more than they are contributing will remain. That will force insurers to increase premiums, which means even fewer healthy people will be able to afford insurance, etc, etc...

It's also a round-about way of defunding Planned Parenthood, since federal money won't be allowed for any facility that performs any abortions other than rape, incest, or serious harm to the mother.

The HSA yearly amount will increase, which is good, but that's really just a 25%-30% discount, since it's our own money going in, but it's tax exempt. Helpful, but it won't offset even a fraction of the damage the rest of this bill will cause.

I find it ironic that Trump keeps calling Obamacare a disaster because honestly, what is happening in Washington right now with regards to this "beautiful, amazing healthcare" he keeps promising is a complete and utter disaster. The GOP is all over the place, scrambling to just get anything passed and through. Such a mess. SMH.Chat Icon

Re: Senate has no idea what they're voting on for health care bill

I'm watching a live blog. McCain, Murkowski and Collins voted no, so the "skinny repeal" bill is dead for now.

Another reprieve.... for now...

Hopefully they can stop this insanity and actually try and write something useful.
