Selling and Buying a House at the same time

This is a little premature, but I had an interview way out east and if I get it, my husband wants to sell our house and move about 20 minutes or so further east so my commute is cut in half and his is about 20 minutes.

Now obviously we didn't decide anything yet, but

Step 1) Put house on the market (and yes we would use you JandJ) .

Now do we look for a house while our house is on the market? Do we wait to sell it? We would need to go from one house to the next.

How about money? Do we need a huge downpayment again for the second house?

If anyone has any experience with this please give any advice or tips, just in case

With the way the market is it probably wouldn't be a good idea to buy anything before selling your house now.

I agree with the above poster as to buying another house. Some people take the equity out of one house to put a downpayment on another. I don't think it has to be all that big as when you sell your house whatever profit you make can go toward the purchase price of hte new house.

I agree with the other posts--I wouldn't buy until you have a signed contract these days. You can start looking now though, and have some possibilities in mind if you do get a buyer right away. The difficult part of that is finding a house you love and not being able to put an offer on it.

But it might be good to have some possibilities in mind, or at least narrow down the towns you want to look in when you are ready.

Since we just did this I would put your house on the market and wouldn't start looking until you have a serious offer and probably an actual contract. If you find a house now you might not get it because not all seller's are willing to sell to a buyer were their is a contincincy. You also don't know how long it take to sell your house.

We most likely will be going through this too. We are meeting with a broker tonight about listing our house and have started to look a little but we know we can't even put in an offer until we feel solid about our house selling.
