security alarm without using lan line

I noticed that their are companies that do security Alarms without a LAN line and can contact your cell phone. What companies offer this? We currently have slomins but they are connected through the phone line which I want to.get rid of to cut down on expenses.

Re: security alarm without using lan line

We just looked into this. The company we use offered the option of a land line connection to central monitoring, or we could have a cellular system installed. The land line was just the cost of the monthly monitoring - about $78 a quarter. The cellular system, if we added it now (and dropped the land line) would be about $2 more per month for the monthly monitoring and a $300 fee for the installation of the equipment. It uses a separate cellular system, it doesn't just use your personal cell phone and you still have monthly monitoring fees. You'd save the cost of your land line if you dropped that altogether but you still have monthly monitoring fees.

Re: security alarm without using lan line

Slomins call our house first (cable line) and then our cells. We could change it to our cells or anyone else's (which we've done when we are away) at anytime.

Re: security alarm without using lan line

the issue of contacting YOU when your alarm goes off isnt the problem. its getting the signal from the house to the alarm monitoring company.

there are several solutions... most of which will never beat a dedicated land line phone.

VoIP, cellular, internet, etc... but none of them have the reliability of a land line phone.

Why wouldn't these have the reliability of a land line?

Cellular is probably the most reliable out of the three because it would take multiple towers going out to prevent a cellular call from going through.

If there is a widespread blackout, it is still likely uo will not get landline service as the D-Marks on the poles and such can still be affected. And even if they were on, most likely you wouldn't even be able to place a call as all lines would be flooded.

To answer the OP... I have IP monitoring (internet) as well as cellular. I do not use a landline. I think my system is pretty secure and reliable.

ETA: If anyone needs a FANTASTIC security consultant... I can recommend one. He installs security systems that are just as good, if not better than all the big names (ADT, Slomins, etc.).

The best thing about using a security consultant vs. a big name company is the fact that you won't have to sign any long term contracts with an alarm company with their inflated rates. My guy hooked me up with United Central Monitoring and I pay like $28 bucks (I think) a month for Cellular + IP Monitoring. You can't get that kind of deal elsewhere.

He also does other aspects of security like video survelience, cameras, etc.

Re: security alarm without using lan line

We have this through Vivinit (formerly APX Alarm).

We had them reprogram our system though, so its primary line is our land line, and backup is a cell signal. Since we have poor cell reception here, the alarm was constantly going off when it was connected primarily through cell.

Unless your land line is handled by Verizon.... we had their low hanging line get ripped out of the house by a passing vehicle before the strike and they wouldn't even come out to the house for over a week. We've had nothing but problems since - 3 visits and two weeks to get them to hook us up again and it still doesn't work right. Static when it rains, crossed lines - we sometimes hear other people and they hear us, and the other night we had a call from 911 saying there was a call and hang-up from our house but we didn't initiate it - we were the only two in the house and neither of us were using the phone. In the 10 years we've lived here I haven't found Verizon to be all that reliable.
