RSV Vaccine - Did/Will anyone get it?

When DS was born, they told me that they recommend all preemies get the RSV vaccine because it's especially dangerous for preemies to get RSV. But DS was born at the end of RSV season, so he didn't get it then. We're not sure if insurance will approve him to get it now for this RSV season.

Did or will anyone get the RSV vaccine for their kids? Not sure if non-preemies get it, that's why I'm asking. Chat Icon

My twins who were born 10 months early got the RSV shot monthly from October - May of last year.

They did suffer many side effects such as coughing, stuffiness, and occasional ear infections. But in the long run its better than getting RSV.

The shots were very painful. The Dr equates them to a an adult getting a cortizone shot.

My DD was born 7 weeks early and yes, last year recieved it.
I think she got 3 rounds of it (once a month).
Im not sure if she gets it again this year. I have to call ped. and make flu shot appts and ask about this as well.

No, RSV is a respiratory infection (disease?)... rotovirus is different. Chat Icon

Chat Icon No one mentioned any of this to me and since I don't even know if he will be able to get it, I haven't really looked into it yet.

Ugh, not sure if he should get it now. I'm not even sure if he NEEDS to get it, but he was a preemie ... but he's not now, so... going to have to get more info now. Thanks for sharing!

Interesting. DD was never offered that and she was a preemie, too. Too bad -- she had RSV when she was 4 months old and it was AWFUL!!

Did your DD have similar reactions as MrsDrMatt's DC?

My DS was born about a month premature and actually ended up having RSV at about 2.5 months. I asked the doctor about the vaccine and he said that we can try to put the papework through with the insurance co but they rarely approve it because there has to be a number of factors for it (lung issues was one of them). We opted not to go through with it because ds didn't have any other issues.

Re: RSV Vaccine - Did/Will anyone get it?

My girls got it last year. Once a month for 5 months from Oct - March.

They will get it again this year.

My insurance covered it...( it has recently changed so maybe I should pray it does this yr too!) ..I was told they were eligible for 3 years.

My Daughter had RSV even with the shot, but it could have been a really bad case, much worse, as it was she was hospitilized for 5 days...I know first hand how much its needed and I will fight to get them covered for it this year,e specially with their older brother in school 5 days a week.

eta- last year they changes the requirements....You had to meet 3 on a list of a bunch. They babies had to be born before 34.5 weeks, and have a few other criteria. For us it was the birth week, the fact they had an older sibling in the hosue ( whom had had RSV as well as a child) and that they were multiples.

This year, the criteria changes as they are 1 and I know Chloe will meet it b/c one criteria is having had rsv previously.

And my girls never had any reaction to it.

Re: RSV Vaccine - Did/Will anyone get it?

DD #1 was born in sept 2007.

she got the shot once a month from october to may (I think)

she hasn't gotten one since. she does get all the other shots the ped recommends.

eta: our insurance covered it, but it was a pain it the butt to finally get authorization.

dd was born at 32 weeks, 5 days.

Thanks everyone. DS was born at 32 weeks, not sure if he meets any of the other criteria. I'm waiting to hear back from insurance if it's even approved.
